Still waiting on possible roster moves (Simon update)

The Orioles won't know whether they'll need to make any roster moves today until first baseman Derrek Lee shows up at Fenway Park and infielder Cesar Izturis is examined back in Baltimore. Lee left last night's game in the third inning with a strained left oblique. The club listed him as day-to-day, and he'll be reevaluated once he arrives at the ballpark and heads to the trainer's room. Izturis flew back to Baltimore yesterday after complaining of some numbness in his right hand. He'll undergo an MRI today and be examined this afternoon by team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens. "His elbow's been bothering him when he swings right-handed and he gets it periodically," said Andy MacPhail, president of baseball operations. "I think it's a result of the Tommy John surgery he had. We may have to calm it down a little, depending on what the MRI shows." Robert Andino can handle the utility infield duties if Izturis goes on the disabled list. Izturis hasn't played since Thursday in the 12-inning game against the Mariners, hasn't batted since May 8 and has only two at-bats since May 3. Depending on Lee's availability, the Orioles could recall first baseman Brandon Snyder, who's batting .276 with nine doubles, five homers and 16 RBIs in 35 games with Triple-A Norfolk. Nolan Reimold is hitting .220 with five doubles, five homers, 19 RBIs and 38 strikeouts in 36 games and 127 at-bats. The Orioles have discussed bringing up a backup catcher, but Craig Tatum remains on the disabled list with a right shoulder impingement. John Hester is batting .182 with one RBI and two errors in 11 games with the Tides since being acquired from the Diamondbacks. Another option would be adding a reliever and going back to a 13-man pitching staff. Update: According to this translated Associated Press story, "the case of pitcher Alfredo Simon, who is accused of shooting and killing a man and wounded another, will go to trial, a judge ruled Monday." Simon was jailed for almost two months in the Dominican following the shooting death of his cousin, Michael Castillo, on New Year's Day. Castillo's 17-year-old brother, Starlin Castillo, was wounded. The families of the victims withdrew their civil suit against Simon, who was granted bail and given a work visa. Simon returned to the U.S. last night after making a return trip to the Dominican on Saturday. He rejoined Double-A Bowie and is scheduled to pitch tonight in Richmond while continuing his rehab assignment.
