The Orioles won't go with a six-man bullpen for much longer, and the extra arm may arrive later today. Manager Buck Showalter wants to get back to seven relievers and be able to match up rather than just choose who's most rested.
Tyler Wilson is slated to start tonight for Triple-A Norfolk and he's been down for more than 10 days, making him eligible to return to the majors. The Orioles considered bringing up Jorge Rondon while they were in Toronto before choosing Mychal Givens. Rondon also is on the 40-man roster.
Kevin Gausman will be recalled from Norfolk to make Thursday's start against the Rangers that concludes the homestand. Showalter stated that he won't stay with a six-man rotation.
If you think Bud Norris is on his way out after tying his career high Monday night by allowing four home runs, you need to guess again. Showalter has given no indication that the Orioles are contemplating a change despite Norris' 6.79 ERA in 11 starts.
"He's had a couple good starts," Showalter said. "I tell you, it's so easy to beat up on people when they're down. I've got it. Talking to Bud after the sixth inning, Bud's a confident guy and he knows it's there. The last pitch he threw yesterday was 95 mph, an unhittable fastball to (Elvis) Andrus in a spot we were trying to get the baseball on him.
"I've been impressed with the way he's handled the adversity a little bit, but you'd like for it to end for his sake. Nobody likes to see another human being suffer. But I guarantee who enjoys it is the team we're facing. Nobody cares about your problems. They're going to try to step on your neck when you're down. That's why this is such a competitive place. But Bud's probably as healthy ... he's in really good physical shape arm-wise, shoulder-wise, innings counts. That's what's tough.
"He's had a couple times where you thought he was getting ready to take off and he just hasn't been consistent."
Wei-Yin Chen, who takes the mound tonight, is sporting a 3-4 record despite his 2.90 ERA in 14 starts. He's allowed two earned runs or fewer in all four June outings, with six walks and 28 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings.
Chen is 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four career starts against the Rangers, with five earned runs (six total) in 27 innings. The current group is 12-for-56 (.214) against him.
Elvis Andrus is 6-for-11 with two doubles against Chen, and Shin-Soo Choo is 2-for-4 with two home runs.
Rangers starter Nick Martinez leads the majors with 12 hit batters. Dig in at your own risk.
Martinez had an uneven June, countering his good outings with two duds. He allowed seven runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings against the White Sox and eight earned runs (nine total) and nine hits in six innings against the Blue Jays in his most recent outing. However, he allowed one earned run in 26 innings in April and three earned runs or fewer in all six starts in May.
Martinez's only start at Camden Yards came on July 1, 2014, when he allowed six earned runs (eight total) and seven hits in five innings. Steve Pearce, Caleb Joseph and Nelson Cruz hit home runs in the Orioles' 8-3 victory.
Martinez also faced the Orioles on June 4, 2014 in Texas and allowed four earned runs (six total) and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. Chris Davis and Nick Markakis hit home runs in the Orioles' 6-5 victory.
Manny Machado's 12-game hitting streak ties the Orioles' season-high set by Jimmy Paredes on May 1-13.
