Matt Wieters, Miguel Gonzalez and Chris Davis comment after O's loss to Texas

Miguel Gonzalez gave up a season high six runs and a career-high-tying three homers tonight as Texas beat the Orioles 8-6 with another four-homer night at Camden Yards.

"He just had a few mechanical flaws that kept him from throwing strikes like he normally does," catcher Matt Wieters said of Gonzalez. "When he doesn't have his fastball command, something is not quite right with him. But he'll get after it in his bullpen session and be ready to go his next start.

"You have to make good pitches, and Miggy got behind a lot tonight. I called some pitches that didn't quite go as I planned. But, at the same time, probably the one home run that cost us the most was (Mitch) Moreland's second one. I don't think he thought he hit it good. That would be a different game, one run (down) as opposed to three."

Yes, the ball is carrying well at Camden Yards now, but eight homers in two games is a few too many.

"We just have to make better pitches," Wieters said. "Ballpark or not, you make good pitches and it's tough to hit a ball out. You get behind and leave some balls up in the zone, it's going to be tough. You never want to lose any game. We have to refocus and get back to pitching well and playing good defense."

Gonzalez and Bud Norris combined to allow 11 runs and seven homers in 10 1/3 innings the past two games. What was the biggest issue tonight for Gonzalez?

"Just falling behind hitters," he said. "The first two innings, I felt good and after that I just lost it. I was flying open, and my mechanics were not there today. I felt really good in the 'pen, but it just didn't work out today. The last couple of games, they have swung it well. This is an aggressive team and we haven't pitched the way we wanted to."

Miguel-Gonzalez-white-sidebar.pngGonzalez allowed three homers in a game for the second time this season (also June 3 at Houston) and fourth time in his career. He entered this start with a record of 3-0 and 2.25 ERA in six home starts and gave up just five homers in 40 innings in those outings.

"I feel bad we couldn't win this game because I didn't do my job. I know we will come back tomorrow and win a ballgame," he said as his record falls to 6-5 with a 4.04 ERA.

Chris Davis hit a pair of two-run homers tonight, producing his second multi-homer game of the year and ninth of his career.

"I feel good at the plate," Davis said. "Just trying to have good at-bats. I think it's contagious when one or two guys starts feeling well. Guys start putting up runs early, but unfortunately it wasn't enough tonight."

Davis now has a 10-game hitting streak and is batting .351/.429/.730 during the streak. He also has 16 RBIs over his last 18 games.

"I feel like I've been pretty close all season. I had some stretches where I was swinging at balls out of the strike zone and that is the biggest thing - being aggressive in the strike zone," Davis said. "One thing I've been proud of this season is my walks. Even when I wasn't swinging well I was still able to get on base and that is big with the guys around me in this lineup."
