The Orioles have just one win this year with Bergesen on the mound

No knock on Brad Bergesen, but when he has started this year, the Orioles have lost almost every time. They are just 1-7 in his eight starts this year. He'll try to begin to reverse that tonight when he makes his ninth start of the season tonight at Oakland. Bergesen is 1-5 with a 5.64 ERA on the season and his last appearance was on May 19. In his career, when pitching with six or more days of rest, he is 3-3 with an 5.65 ERA over eight starts. Showing his inconsistency this year, he gave up five runs in 4 2/3, three starts ago against Tampa. Then he went out and pitched a four-hit shutout against Tampa and followed that up by allowing eight runs in 3 1/3 in that last start against the Yankees. Bergesen has just two quality starts among eight on the year. Lefty batters hit .279 against him while right-handed batters hit .263, and with runners in scoring position, hitters have a .356 average against him. In his only previous outing ever versus Oakland last May 27, he did not get a decision giving up four hits and four earned runs over seven innings. Josh Outman, a 26-year-old lefty with a nifty name for a pitcher, is on the mound tonight for the A's. In his first major league start of this season on Monday, he pitched very well at Los Angeles. Over seven innings and 102 pitches, he gave up five hits and just one run. Outman had Tommy John surgery on June 30, 2009 and missed all of last year. He began this year with Triple-A Sacramento, going 4-1 with a 4.78 ERA. He struggled with control, walking 27 over 37 2/3 in the Pacific Coast League. Let's see if either pitcher can get through the first inning with a zero on the board tonight. Bergesen's first-inning ERA this season is 10.13 and Outman's was 12.38 in Triple-A. Outman will be facing the Orioles for the first time in his career. He is 5-3 with an ERA of 3.60 in 21 career major games, 17 starts.
