The other side of Bergesen

We marveled at Brad Bergesen's four-hit shutout at Tropicana Field on Saturday. We mumbled to ourselves during his 3 1/3 innings tonight. A few of you might not have used your indoor voices. Bergesen is charged with eight runs and five hits, with three walks and two strikeouts. He threw 77 pitches, 47 for strikes, before Chris Jakubauskas replaced him. All five hits off Bergesen went for extra bases: Three triples and two doubles. When is the last time you've seen that happen? The last run off Bergesen scored when Jakubauskas gave up Mark Teixeira's 402-foot bomb with Derek Jeter on third base. This is Bergesen's shortest outing of the season. He went 3 2/3 innings against the Tigers on April 6 and 4 2/3 innings against Tampa on May 8. His ERA increased from 4.35 to 5.64. Once again, we can wonder whether he's pitched his way out of the rotation. Brian Matusz will make at least one more injury rehab start. Alfredo Simon is expected to be activated on Sunday, but he's viewed as a long reliever at the moment. Bergesen began the night 0-3 with a 7.29 ERA in four career starts and 21 innings against the Yankees. It didn't get any better for him tonight. It's fair to wonder if he would have been better served facing the Nationals tomorrow night. And to be fair, Felix Pie could have saved three runs if he made that catch in the first inning, and Nick Markakis couldn't hold onto the ball on Derek Jeter's RBI triple that sent Bergesen to the bench.
