Thome and Patton activated

BOSTON - The Orioles made the anticipated roster moves today by reinstating designated hitter Jim Thome and left-hander Troy Patton from the 15-day disabled list. No corresponding moves are necessary with the expanded rosters. Thome was placed on the DL retroactive to July 28 with a herniated disc in his neck. He was batting .261/.354/.391 with two homers and six RBIs in 18 games for the Orioles after being acquired from the Phillies on June 30. He hit .316/.409/.526 in his last 10 games before going on the DL. Patton was placed on the DL retroactive to Aug. 13 with a sprained right ankle. He was 1-0 with a 2.58 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 50 appearances covering 52 1/3 innings before suffering the injury. Patton hasn't allowed a run in eight consecutive appearances spanning 13 2/3 innings since July 6. The Orioles had a shortage of left-handed relievers, but they've got plenty now with Patton joining Brian Matusz, Zach Phillips and Randy Wolf. Has anyone heard from J.C. Romero? Thome and Patton had been shaking off the rust in the instructional league before heading to Fenway Park. They're both eligible for the postseason roster because they were in the organization on Aug. 31.
