Thursday morning musings

SARASOTA, Fla. - Pitchers and catchers take the field at 10 a.m. today for the pre-workout stretch. We're moving toward a more normal spring training schedule. The clubhouse will be open to the media from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m., and again following the workout. Perhaps infielder Yamaico Navarro will make an appearance and complete the roster. Then again, it could expand if outfielder Trayvon Robinson cleared waivers. We're supposed to find out today. And hey, there's that whole Jair Jurrjens situation. Manager Buck Showalter indicated that Navarro is in Sarasota. We just haven't seen him in camp. The two worst locker locations belong to pitcher Adam Russell and infielder Niuman Romero, who are situated on opposite corners next to the refrigerators. A player opens the door and risks crashing it into one of the teammates. Steve Johnson had one of those lockers last spring, but he's moving up in the world - and out of harm's way. Speaking of Romero, he may be the most anonymous players in camp. Never heard of him. Had no idea the Orioles signed him. Romero, 28, is a non-roster invitee who agreed to a minor league deal on Dec. 14 after spending last season at Double-A Erie. He appeared in 10 games with the Cleveland Indians in 2009 and two with the Boston Red Sox in 2010, going a combined 2-for-18 with three runs scored. Romero took ground balls at shortstop yesterday, and he looks a little bit like Steve Pearce from a distance. We're still putting faces with the names in camp. I met Russ Canzler after watching him walk to a locker that had the name Canzler above it. Jason Pridie has one of the thickest beards I've seen from any player not named Brian Wilson. One player walked past me yesterday while heading to another field, turned and said, 'My wife said you were hitting on her on the plane.' Then he smiled. We must have been on the same flight, but I never saw her. Yeah, he got me. As if Showalter needed another reason to love his team, he noticed that the players sitting in the front row during a meeting this week included Matt Wieters, Jason Hammel, Darren O'Day, Jim Johnson and Pedro Strop. He pointed it out to bench coach John Russell. "Most guys sit in the back," Showalter said. "These guys were sitting right up front. 'What have we got?' It's the little things." And finally, I'm especially missing my daughter today on her 20th birthday The teen years were a blur. Life moves too fast. Need to figure out how to slow it down.
