Tillman matches shortest start of season (we're tied)

ARLINGTON, Texas - Pitching on normal rest tonight after being moved up two days, Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman is done after failing to record an out in the second inning. Again. Tillman faced 11 batters and left with the Rangers leading 5-0. He threw 51 pitches, the last resulting in an RBI single for Elvis Andrus. Brad Brach replaced Tillman and got a force and a double play, leaving Tillman with five runs on his ledger. Tillman allowed six hits, walked three, struck out one and gave up a home run. Tillman also couldn't get an out in the second inning on May 21 in Pittsburgh, when he threw 44 pitches and was charged with eight runs and seven hits. It's happened twice to an Orioles starter in the same season. When's the last time that happened? Tillman has allowed 14 runs in the first inning over his 13 starts this season, including two tonight to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead. He's allowed 13 runs in the second inning this season, including two tonight that increased the Rangers' lead to 4-0. Tillman received two visits from pitching coach Dave Wallace in two innings. Didn't help him. The first four batters reached against Tillman, who threw 30 pitches in the opening inning. Shin-Soo Choo led off with a walk, Elvis Andrus doubled and Mitch Moreland stroked a two-run single into left field. Adrian Beltre followed with a single, a moral victory of sorts considering how he owns the Orioles, but Alex Rios struck out on a 90 mph cutter and Chris Gimenez grounded into a double play. Leonys Martin led off the second with a single and Michael Choice followed with a 403-foot home run to left-center field. Consecutive walks to Rougned Odor and Choo were followed by Andrus' single. Tillman held the Astros to one run over 6 2/3 innings on May 31. Remove that start, and he's surrendered 19 runs and 20 hits in three starts over 7 2/3 innings. He keeps saying that he's healthy, that it's just a command issue. Something's not right. Instant update: Nick Markakis just homered for the second time in two hits, a two-run shot off Colby Lewis in the third to reduce Texas' lead to 5-2. Markakis has five home runs this season. He's a career .343 hitter at Globe Life Park, his highest average at any American League ballpark. Update II: Colby Lewis, ladies and gentlemen. Colby Lewis. The Orioles scored three runs off Lewis in the fifth to tie the game. Adam Jones had a two-run double - center fielder Leonys Martin lost the ball after appearing to make a diving catch - and Chris Davis followed with an RBI single. Lewis began tonight with a 5.44 ERA. It's not getting any lighter. Brach has given the Orioles three scoreless innings. Ryan Webb is warming in the sixth. Brach went 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out two.
