Tonight's game and another roster deadline

Yovani Gallardo needs to be a fast healer, and not due to another health crisis.

Gallardo turned in the shortest start of his career Friday night in New York, allowing eight runs (seven earned) and six hits in 1 1/3 innings. He lasted 41 pitches and the game unraveled as though Robert Redford squared it up.

In his other four starts this month, Gallardo has surrendered 10 runs (nine earned) in 24 innings.

Gallardo is making his third start against the Blue Jays this season. He faced them on June 18 after coming off the disabled list and allowed two runs in five innings. He saw them again on July 30 and allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Gallardo-Throws-Black-Sidebar.jpgOverall, Gallardo is 4-1 with a 3.03 ERA in five career starts versus the Blue Jays. The Orioles need him to forget about the Yankees. They'd sure like to do it.

Edwin Encarnacion is 9-for-22 with a double and three home runs against Gallardo. Josh Donaldson is 5-for-14, Troy Tulowitzki is 11-for-33 with four doubles and a home run and Devon Travis is 3-for-7 with a double and home run.

Darwin Barney is 3-for-25, Jose Bautista is 1-for-16 and Justin Smoak is 0-for-8 with six strikeouts.

Aaron Sanchez is back in the majors, just in time to start against the Orioles after the Jays optioned him to Single-A Dunedin on Aug. 21 to better control his innings. He's 12-2 with a 2.99 ERA in 24 starts this season.

Timing is everything. The Orioles could use an improvement in theirs.

Maybe Sanchez will flash back to June 12, when he allowed six runs and 10 hits in five innings against the Orioles, who still managed a 10-9 loss at Rogers Centre. He faced them again five nights later and allowed two runs (one earned) in six innings in a 13-3 win.

The Orioles got a third crack at him on July 31 and were held to two runs and four hits over seven innings, but they posted a 6-2 victory at Rogers Centre.

Sanchez is 3-2 with a 4.85 ERA in 11 career games (six starts) against the Orioles. He's registered a 1.641 WHIP in 39 innings. He's 1-2 with a 4.76 ERA in five games (three starts) at Camden Yards, with 10 runs (nine earned) and 20 hits over 17 innings.

Chris Davis is 6-for-14 with a double and three home runs against Sanchez, and Jonathan Schoop is 5-for-12.

Adam Jones is 2-for-17 with a home run. Manager Buck Showalter is tempted to keep him out of the lineup until Friday, an extra day of hamstring recovery made possible by Thursday's off-day.

Meanwhile, executive vice president Dan Duquette will try to complete a trade or two before Thursday morning, the latest Major League Baseball deadline. The challenge is a team like the Yankees blocking every player like a hockey goalie.

Finding the available player is the easy part. Getting him through waivers so he can be traded is another matter.

The Orioles' activity in August 2015 involved releasing pitcher Bud Norris on Aug. 8, purchasing pitcher Matt Buschmann's contract from the Reds on Aug. 10, releasing outfielder Travis Snider on Aug. 15 and signing left-hander Mike Belfiore on Aug. 19.

Our heads are still spinning.

Duquette made more impactful moves on Aug. 30, 2014 when he acquired outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the White Sox for minor league pitchers Mark Blackmar and Miguel Chalas, and infielders Kelly Johnson and Michael Almanzar from the Red Sox for minor league infielders Jemile Weeks and Ivan DeJesus.

The August 2013 transactions included the Orioles selling catcher Ronny Paulino's contract to the Tigers and pitcher Freddy Garcia's contract to the Braves. Paulino's car and Garcia's sweat-soaked shirt also were included.

The bigger deal involved outfielder Xavier Avery going to the Mariners for first baseman Michael Morse, who showed up with a wrist injury, went 3-for-29 with three extra-base hits and signed with the Giants as a free agent.

Loved the walk-up song, though.

Avery returned to the organization and currently is playing at Triple-A Norfolk. Almanzar is one of his teammates.

Duquette acquired left-hander Joe Saunders twice, the first time from the Diamondbacks on Aug. 26, 2012 for reliever Matt Lindstrom. Saunders started the wild card game in Texas and earned the win.
