Top 100 prospect list features three Nationals in Meyer, Goodwin and Rendon

Nationals prospects Anthony Rendon, Brian Goodwin and Alex Meyer all were promoted this season, and with good reason. All three have top-of-the-line talent and have excelled at each level they have played this season. MLB.com recognized the trio in its latest Top 100 list. Prospect expert Jonathan Mayo had Rendon at No. 37, Meyer at No. 57 and Goodwin No. 75. Mayo said of Rendon: "When healthy, he is a plus defender at third. At the plate, (Rendon) has the kind of advanced approach that should allow him to move quickly while hitting for average and power." Rendon finished with a .233 average, but most importantly, he was able to play 43 games, 40 of which after returning from an early season fractured ankle. He will play for the Salt River Rafters in the Arizona Fall League starting Oct. 9. Mayo likes Goodwin at No. 75 and says the Nationals are looking to stockpile players like him and Eury Perez. "The Nationals sure like their toolsy outfielders, and Goodwin has all five tools," Mayo said. "The left-handed hitter has the chance to be an above-average hitter, with a good approach at the plate and the ability to square balls up." Goodwin hit .280 in 100 games, with 14 homers, 18 stolen bases and 52 RBIs. He made the big jump two levels, from low Single-A Hagerstown to Double-A Harrisburg. Mayo believes Meyer should be ranked at No. 57 and says the former University of Kentucky hurler comes at you with top velocity. "Very tall and lanky - Meyer still has plenty of room to add weight and strength to his 6-foot-9 frame," Mayo said in the report. "He has two plus pitches, a fastball up to 97 mph and a power slider (86-88 mph). He also added a changeup, and although it's not as good as the two plus pitches, it has the chance to be an average pitch." Meyer went 10-6 with a 2.86 ERA in 25 starts, striking out 139 hitters. His innings were capped at 129 and he went 3-2 with a 2.31 ERA in seven starts at high Single-A Potomac. Also, former Nationals prospect right-hander A.J. Cole is at No. 99, acquired by the Oakland A's in the Gio Gonzalez trade. You also have to think Perez, Matt Skole and Nathan Karns have to be knocking on the door of the Top 100 with the season they had in 2012.
