Toronto gets three in the first (Orioles win 6-5)

TORONTO - This stat should tell you how tonight's game started for Orioles right-hander Tyler Wilson: In a span of six batters in the first inning he gave up three runs against Toronto. That matched the run total the O's staff had allowed combined over the previous four games.

The O's trailed 3-1 at the end of the first tonight at Rogers Centre.

It began well for the Orioles. Adam Jones walked on six pitches to start the game and advanced to second on Hyun Soo Kim's groundout. He scored easily when Manny Machado lined a double to left.

But when Mark Trumbo doubled to deep right with two outs, Machado held up at second base, apparently not sure of the number of outs, and he got a late start and was out 9-6-2 on a close play at the play. A replay review confirmed the out call and Machado drove in a run and then cost his team one as well in the top of the first.

Then Toronto jumped on Wilson with a pair of hard-hit doubles, a single and walk producing a 3-1 lead. Edwin Encarnacion's sac fly scored Jose Bautista, who led off with a double. Michael Saunders added an RBI double and Russell Martin an RBI single for the Blue Jays in the home first.

The scoring did not stop there as Bautista added an RBI single in the second for a 4-1 lead. The O's scored twice in the third to pull within 4-3. They loaded the bases as Jones singled, Kim was hit by a pitch and Machado singled. A Chris Davis line drive sac fly plated their second run and a Matt Wieters RBI grounder made it a 4-3 game. Wieters has 15 RBIs his last 17 games.

Both starting pitchers struggled recently and that carried into tonight. Wilson is 0-4 with a 6.35 ERA his last four starts and Marcus Stroman of Toronto is 1-2 with a 7.77 ERA his past four.

Update: Toronto extended its lead to 5-3 in the third. Bautista walked with two outs and none on and scored on Donaldson's triple to right. Trumbo was nearing the liner in the gap but could not make the play as Bautista scored to provide the Blue Jays a two-run lead. Wilson was at 86 pitches through five innings tonight.

The long ball comes: The O's cut the lead to 5-4 in the sixth when Pedro Alvarez hit a solo homer to left-center off Stroman and he then was replaced by Blue Jays right-hander Joe Biagini. It was No. 6 for Alvarez.

Another longball visit ties it: Davis hit his second homer in two nights and 13th on the year to tie this game, 5-5 in the seventh. Toronto lefty Aaron Loup came on for the left on left matchup and Davis foiled the strategy. He was batting just .175 on the year and slugging only .333 versus lefties before that homer. It's a battle of the bullpens now.

Wilson was replaced by Dylan Bundy in the sixth and he pitched out of two-on jam, striking out Josh Donaldson looking at a 97 mph heater. Bundy's fastball touched 96 and 97 in the sixth. Wilson went 5 2/3 innings allowing seven hits and five runs and now has an ERA of 4.73.

Another comeback win: After they tied it, they won it. The Orioles scratched out a run in the top of the ninth off Jays closer Roberto Osuna for a comeback, 6-5 win. Hyun Soo Kim ripped a double to left center leading off the ninth and Joey Rickard pinch ran. A grounder advanced him to third and Davis hit a sac fly to center for his third RBI tonight to break the 5-5 tie. Kim has 12 hits his last 32 at-bats.

Zach Britton pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to record his 19th save in 19 chances as the O's bullpen threw 3 1/3 scoreless tonight and Bundy got the victory.

With the win the Orioles have won eight of their past nine games and are 36-23. That is a season-high 13 games over .500. Check here later for postgame quotes.

On playing with a 24-man roster when the suspension is served: "It's tough, it's tough. Are you allowed to option that guy out and play at full strength? He serves it when he comes back in September. We wouldn't do that with Manny, I don't think.

"Just kind of tough when you have to play short because of something someone else kind of got going. I know they put a lot of time and thought into it. Most of it is dictated by precedent. I think they take in all the circumstances of each thing."

Will O's look to appeal suspension so Machado does not miss AL East games?: "Not really. We have a big series every series. Just had one and have one after this one. They are all big series. I don't look at one being more...as far as dealing with something strategically I think we'll do that. It's got nothing to do with who we're playing. The biggest thing is making sure it's fair and if we don't think it's fair try to knock it down. When it happens we'll take it, no matter who we are playing. That doesn't figure into it for us."

Showalter said this is not a distraction for the team: "No. Everybody here has had things like this. Are people wanting to stop the season because Darren O'Day is hurt. Or (Yovani) Gallardo, or (Caleb) Joseph or (J.J.) Hardy. Or Manny gets suspended. You can't let that creep in. There is an excuse around every corner. Sometimes your whole season's success is dictated by how you handle those situations."
