Trumbo activated, Vielma recalled

The latest strokes to the Orioles' 25-man roster were applied today prior to the start of their three-game series in Anaheim.

Mark Trumbo has been activated from the disabled list and likely will make his debut tonight, whether he's in right field or serving as the designated hitter.

The Orioles optioned outfielder Joey Rickard to Norfolk following Sunday's game to create a spot for Trumbo as the corresponding move.

Trumbo began his career with the Angels, appearing in 460 games, before a Dec. 10, 2013 trade to the Diamondbacks. He's a career .253/.300/.464 hitter at Angel Stadium.

The Angels are starting right-hander Nick Tropeano tonight. Trumbo is 1-for-5 with a home run against him. He's 2-for-8 with a home run against left-hander Andrew Heaney, who starts the second game of the series.

Utility infielder Luis Sardiñas was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his lower back. Manager Buck Showalter alerted the media of the pending move on Sunday.

Sardiñas wasn't available for the game and the Orioles began to make contingency plans. They summoned infielder Engelb Vielma, who officially was recalled today from Norfolk.

Vielma is 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in three games with the Orioles. His only start came on April 18 in Detroit. He was 7-for-36 (.194) with the Tides.

Sardiñas was 2-for-18 with a home run in eight games with the Orioles.

The Orioles continue to carry a four-man bench.

They won't face Shohei Ohtani, whose next start is pushed back to the weekend due to a sprained left ankle. However, he's expected to serve as the designated hitter.

The Angels still aren't listing a starter for Thursday.
