Trying to change these Sox (with Mahoney update)

If you need some good news to perk you up, the Yankee fans left Baltimore after Sunday's game. They had to make room for all the Red Sox fans. Didn't perk you up? Sorry. The Orioles have lost 11 of 13. The Red Sox have won five in a row and eight of nine. I'm really doing a lousy job of improving your moods. Again, sorry. As I mentioned yesterday, the Orioles have been outscored 10-2 in the first inning this season. Boston has pitched back-to-back shutouts. Probably not a good idea for the Orioles to fall behind early tonight. Or at all. Clay Buchholz is 5-2 with a 2.98 ERA in nine career appearances (eight starts) against the Orioles, including a no-hitter. They're batting .197 against him. OK, enough of the Debbie Downer act. Buchholz is toting a 5.31 ERA. The league average for starters is 3.93. And he's walked 14 and struck out 10 in 20 1/3 innings. The Orioles aren't hitting and Buchholz can't find the plate. My advice: Don't swing! That's especially good advice for Nick Markakis, who's 2-for-20 lifetime against Buchholz, and Luke Scott, who's 1-for-16. Brian Roberts is 7-for-18 with a double, triple, three RBIs and five walks. Adam Jones is 3-for-9 with a double, home run and four RBIs. Vladimir Guerrero is 4-for-9 with two RBIs. Matt Wieters is 4-for-11 with two doubles. Is it time to move up Wieters? He's mostly been hitting eighth - he jumped to fifth when Scott was sidelined with a sore groin - and I've preached that the Orioles should leave him alone and let him thrive near the bottom of the order. It's working for him. Then again, he went 0-for-6 with four strikeouts in the abbreviated Yankees series. So much for improving your moods. I give up. Zach Britton might bring a smile tonight. Down on the farm, outfielder Trent Mummey, a fourth-round pick out of Auburn, celebrated his promotion to the Carolina League last night by going 4-for-6 with a double, triple and five RBIs in Single-A Frederick's 14-7 victory over Winston-Salem. Jacob Julius hit his first home run and collected four RBIs. Also, Double-A Bowie first baseman Joe Mahoney has been activated from the disabled list, and outfielder Miguel Abreu has been transferred to Frederick. Mahoney was 1-for-7 in two games before injuring his quad.
