Ty Kelly's big season and a look at minor league records

After spending all of the last two seasons at Single-A Delmarva, Ty Kelly was considered a decent player but was not listed among the Orioles' top minor league prospects. But his play this year should be getting him some attention. He recently moved up to Double-A Bowie from Single-A Frederick, and is 9-for-23 with four RBIs in his first six Baysox games. But Kelly, a 13th-round pick out of Cal-Davis in 2009, put up some really impressive numbers at Frederick. In 76 Keys games, he batted .346 with nine homers, 41 RBIs, .460 OBP, .513 slugging percentage and OPS of 973. He played at both second and third base for the Keys and has started at third at Bowie. Kelly entered this season with a career .360 OBP over three seasons and an OPS of .701. He's a switch-hitter who just turned 24. Kelly homered nine times in 310 games from 2009 to 2011, and this season he has hit ten homers over 93 games. After he hit .274 with four homers and 46 RBIs in 2011 with Delmarva, no one could see a season like this coming for him, but you have to give Kelly credit for continuing to put in the work on his game that is paying off for him during a breakout season. He's been flying under the radar, but maybe it's about time he didn't. With about a month and a half to go in the minor league seasons, only two Orioles farm teams have winning records. Keep in mind that a team's win-loss record does not reflect the level of prospects on the club, and sometimes you just can't read too much into these records. Still, of course, you always want to win when you can. The Orioles' two highest level clubs are having winning seasons at this point: Triple-A Norfolk 52-51 Double-A Bowie 51-49 Single-A Frederick 41-59 Single-A Delmarva 40-58 Short-season Single-A Aberdeen 11-23 Gulf Coast League 11-17 Dominican Summer League 17-24 Minor moves today: In some player movement on the farm today, outfielder Johnny Ruettiger is moving from Frederick to Bowie to take Aaron Baker's roster spot. I reported last night that Baker is headed to the Bowie DL with an oblique strain. Roderick Bernadina is moving from Aberdeen to Frederick and Gregory Lorenzo is going from the Gulf Coast League to Aberdeen. These moves all involved outfielders and could potentially be temporary moves. Steve Pearce could become active later at Triple-A and Antoan Richardson is injured and out for a few days at Bowie. If both return, some of these players could return to their previous clubs.
