Update on J.J. Hardy and note on Paul Janish

KANSAS CITY - Orioles shortstop J.J Hardy will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection Thursday, delaying his arrival on the road trip.

Hardy was placed on the disabled list yesterday with a strained left groin. He underwent an examination today in Baltimore and was supposed to fly into Kansas City to continue his treatments. The Orioles have a locker set up for him in the visiting clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium.

Manager Buck Showalter will provide more information during today's session with the media.

Paul Janish is making his Orioles debut tonight on the same day that they selected his contract from Triple-A Norfolk. He's starting at shortstop against Royals left-hander Danny Duffy.

Tides manager Ron Johnson passed along the news to Janish yesterday.

"We actually had a rare off-day down in Norfolk and R.J. gave me a call around lunchtime, I guess. And I was excited, fired up, for a lot of reasons," Janish said.

"It's good to be back in the big leagues and hopefully at a time when the team needs some help. I'm excited."

Janish got a late start in spring training after undergoing surgery in February to remove bone chips from his right elbow. The delay ruined his chances of making the club.

"It's been a little bit of a grind," he said. "It's an adjustment being in the minor leagues for a period of time, but it's part of it. Fortunately, the team down in Norfolk has been playing really well, so that helps. R.J. does a really good job down in Triple-A with that dynamic on a lot of different levels, so it's been fun. But again, like I said, it's really good to be back here."

It's more rewarding for Janish when he considers how he worked his way back from the surgery.

"It was unfortunate early on, but it is what it is," he said. "It was one of those things and unfortunately I spent most of the year in Norfolk, but it was as good a time as you can have down there, relatively speaking. But it's good to be back here and hopefully we can finish the season strong."

Janish hasn't played in the majors since 2013 in Atlanta.

"I'm excited on a lot of different fronts, but it just makes you appreciate and remember how sweet it is," he said. "It's something I'm pretty excited about and I'm fortunate to be here."

Manager Buck Showalter raved about Janish's defense in spring training, and the club wants to keep him in the organization beyond this season.

"I hold myself to a pretty high standard, but I've played pretty well on the year as a whole," said Janish, who's committed only four errors this season. "I feel really comfortable. So, as far as that goes I feel like I'm in a good place to go and play at a high level here."

The opportunity starts right away with Janish already in the lineup.

"It's kind of ripping off a Band-Aid," he said. "I'd rather just get it over with. I was excited about that, as far as that goes. However Buck and the team decide to do things is obviously up to them, but I'll just do my best to be ready whenever I'm called upon."
