Updates on O'Day, Worley and Joseph

SAN DIEGO - Orioles reliever Darren O'Day threw his second bullpen session today and it wasn't as encouraging as the first, which took place between games of Saturday's doubleheader at Camden Yards.

O'Day was supposed to pitch in a couple of simulated games on the road trip following today's session. However, he may need to throw in the bullpen for a third time before he's cleared to face hitters.

"Darren's bullpen session was OK. It wasn't quite as good as we hoped it would be," said manager Buck Showalter.

"It's slow. We said at the time, when you get that high hamstring, especially with his delivery, how he's got to get down on that leg, it's slow. No setback or anything. It just didn't move forward much."

Plans for a simulated game have been put on hold.

"I don't know yet," Showalter said. "We'll see how tomorrow comes. He may take another side. He needs to repeat that good side he had the other day before we go into that sim game, from what Wally (Dave Wallace) and Richie (Bancells) are saying."

Vance Worley retired all nine batters he faced tonight at Single-A Frederick, striking out two Carolina hitters and throwing 31 pitches.

Worley, on the disabled list with a strained groin muscle, was making his second appearance on his injury rehab assignment. He could join the Orioles in Seattle for the next series.

"He threw well. It went real well today statistically," Showalter said. "I don't know what the people watching him are going to say, but we'll see."

Caleb Joseph caught Worley, going back-to-back nights behind the plate. Showalter indicated over the weekend that Joseph could return after one game at Frederick and join the team in San Diego, but that's no longer the case.

"I was hoping," he said. "I think they think he needs more."

Perhaps Joseph will show up in Seattle.

"You'd probably have to ask Dan (Duquette)," Showalter said. "I'm just kind of leaving it in their hands. They're watching him.

"I talked to Caleb some yesterday. He felt great. Caught eight innings. See how he feels today. He might be a little sore. But he's been catching in the bullpen for quite a while. He's got almost 30 play appearances, so we'll see.

"Francisco (Pena) is doing a good job. I know Caleb wants to get back as soon as he can. It certainly won't hurt him."
