The next Orioles victory will be the 5,000th in club history, including the postseason.
The Orioles' last doubleheader sweep of the Yankees came on Sept. 24, 1984 in Baltimore, but they've gone 0-4-5 in the last nine twinbills.
Two Blue Angels made a couple of test runs over Camden Yards in the top of the fifth in preparation for this weekend's Star Spangled Celebration, but nothing can break Kevin Gausman's concentration.
Gausman has shut out the Yankees on four hits over five innings, with one walk and five strikeouts. He stranded two runners in the fifth and has his pitch count at 70.
Yankees starter Brandon McCarthy is shutting out the Orioles on two hits through the fifth. Alejandro De Aza singled in the first to extend his hitting streak as an Oriole to seven games, and J.J. Hardy singled in the second.
Hardy has been cleared to play today, but no word on whether he's also going to start Game 2. He seemed to doubt it this morning while interviewed at his locker.
Hardy said he took some swings yesterday with 80 percent effort "and it was much better than in Boston."
As for Game 2, he said, "It's hard to say. I think the smart thing to do, and we've been smart this whole time and not try to rush back and keeping the big picture in mind, if I play the first and I feel great, maybe, but I think probably not. It wouldn't be smart."
The Yankees are starting right-hander Bryan Mitchell in Game 2.
Mitchell made his major league debut on Aug. 10 against the Indians and tossed two scoreless innings in relief. The Yankees recalled him on Sept. 2 for his fourth stint with the club this season.
Update: Gausman blanked New York on seven hits over seven innings, with two walks and seven strikeouts. He threw 106 pitches, 71 for strikes.
The Orioles had a chance to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the eighth. Kelly Johnson doubled and took third on a fielder's choice, with Nick Hundley reaching first. But Jonathan Schoop struck out and Johnson was tagged out trying to get back to third on Nick Markakis' grounder to Stephen Drew.
De Aza drew a two-out walk against Dellin Betances, but Adam Jones struck out.
Andrew Miller struck out the side in the top of the eighth. Darren O'Day has replaced him in the ninth.
