Updating Rogers' injury and latest Orioles acquisition

Josh Rogers is undergoing tests today on his left elbow and the Orioles are braced for more bad news.

Rogers complained of soreness following last night's relief appearance and the Orioles placed him on the injured list, classifying the ailment as a sprain. They should receive the results later today or Thursday morning.

"I'm not a doctor, " said manager Brandon Hyde, "but I don't think it's great."

Rogers was acquired from the Yankees last summer in the Zack Britton trade and is 1-3 with an 8.65 ERA and 1.769 WHIP in eight games.

"I don't think it's ever good to have somebody come out with elbow soreness," Hyde said.

Left-hander John Means will come off the injured list to start Friday night against the Indians. Andrew Cashner and Gabriel Ynoa will start the next two games.

The Indians are countering with Mike Clevinger, Zach Plesac and Shane Bieber.

Hyde said Mark Trumbo's knee is feeling better, but that's pretty much the extent of the update.

"He stayed here this last week and did a bunch of rehab stuff and it went well," Hyde said.

DJ Stewart, on the injured list with a sprained ankle, is playing in the Gulf Coast League. He homered yesterday in his first game.

Henderson-@-Presser-w-Water-Bottle-sidebar.jpgHyde had a brief chance to speak with second-round pick Gunnar Henderson, who took ground balls today at shortstop during batting practice.

"He's physical, a big kid," Hyde said. "Really athletic. I saw some video on him before the draft and it's a strong guy who's even more impressive in person. He's a little bigger than I thought.

"I love the fact that we're getting athletes, middle-of-the-field athletes. It's what we need in this organization, and it's what healthy organizations have is strong up-the-middle and athletic guys."

The Orioles have acquired infielder Patrick Dorrian from the Pirates as the player to be named later in the Yefry Ramirez trade on May 27. Dorrian will be assigned to Single-A Frederick.

Dorrian is celebrating his 23rd birthday today. The 12th round pick of the Braves in 2014 has hit .290/.384/.484 in two seasons in the Pirates system. He was batting .256/.346/.443 with 17 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 31 RBIs this year in 64 games with Single-A Greensboro.

The three years that followed Dorrian's selection by the Braves were unique, to say the least.

He decided to attend college after reporting to the Gulf Coast League and played at Herkimer County Community College in New York and Division II Lynn University in Florida prior to signing with the Pirates last year as an undrafted free agent. He also played in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, Cape Cod League and New England Collegiate Baseball League.

Dorrian is a left-handed hitter who's handled every infield position.

Manny Machado is batting third again today for the Padres and playing third base.
