Updating some injured minor league pitchers

With as many farm teams and players that there are in the Orioles organization, there will always be some injured minor league players to try and keep track of. Here is a partial list of some pitchers that spent some time injured last year and how they are doing now. I'll update more from the minor leagues as opening day gets closer: * Right-hander Clay Schrader didn't pitch after July 25 last season due to a right elbow flexor mass strain. But he has already reported to minor league camp and is said to be 100 percent now. Schrader, who turns 22 in April, had a very strong season in 2011 between Single-A Delmarva and Single-A Frederick, going a combined 2-2 with a 1.57 ERA. Over 46 innings he allowed just 19 hits with 32 walks and 73 strikeouts. * Right-hander Dan Klein had surgery on Aug. 16, to repair a labrum tear and loosen his shoulder capsule. He is already in minor league camp continuing his rehab program. Not much has changed for Klein in that it continues to be unlikely he will be ready to pitch when the season starts. He could more likely be ready to go around June 1. * Right-hander Jesse Beal is scheduled to report to camp on March 4. He had labrum surgery last May 3 and missed all of the 2011 season. He had some throwing sessions in Baltimore over the winter and could be limited to 80-100 innings this season as he works his way back from that surgery. He could be a candidate to begin this season at extended spring training come opening day and later join an affiliate. * Right-hander Ryan Berry seems fully recovered from the shoulder tendinitis that limited him especially early on last year. By the end of the season Berry was throwing much better and he gave up just one run over his last 16 innings at Frederick and short-season Single-A Aberdeen. He could begin this year with Frederick with a chance to move to Double-A Bowie during the year. * Left-hander Casey Lambert is a pitcher the Orioles selected in the Triple-A phase of the 2010 Rule 5 draft. He suffered a knee injury in spring training last year and missed the entire season. He pitched in the Arizona Fall League and appears to be fully recovered and will report to camp on March 4. * Right-hander Brandon Cooney dealt with elbow and shoulder issues at times last year. He is at camp now and on a throwing program. * Right-hander Luis Lebron is continuing on the comeback trail from Tommy John surgery in May of 2010. The year before he recorded 20 saves between Frederick and Bowie and struck out 91 batters in 60 1/3 innings. Lebron missed all of 2010 and pitched just 10 2/3 innings last year. He seems to be unable to have recovered all his fastball velocity, hitting 91-92 mph on the gun last year after topping out in the mid- and sometimes high-90s pre-surgery. * Left-hander Cameron Coffey went 4-3 with an ERA of 2.21 last summer in the Gulf Coast League but has been able to pitch just 47 2/3 innings combined the last two seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery in high school. Reports indicate that Coffey has struggled to regain his pre-surgery fasball velocity and sat in the mid-80s last summer. * Right-hander Brandon Erbe continues his comeback from labrum surgery in August of 2010. He is currently in camp in Sarasota and taking part in a throwing program. The Baltimore native got into just five games last year between the Gulf Coast League and Aberdeen. In August he cleared waivers after being taken off the O's 40-man roster. He struggled to regain his velocity and command last season. While most minor league pitchers and catchers are not due to report to the Orioles' Buck O'Neil Baseball Complex at Twin Lakes Park until March 4 and position players on March 8, there are several players working out already as part of an early camp that began for some minor leaguers last week. The players were called to report early for various reasons which included some players reporting early that missed time due to injury in 2011. The Orioles did not release a roster of the minor league early campers, but here is a list of some of the players that have reported already. Pitchers: Bobby Bundy, Tim Bascom, Eduardo Rodriguez, Jose Nivar, Klein, Erbe, Schrader, Parker Bridwell, Berry, Tim Berry, Greg Burke, Casey Fossum, Steve Hinton, Stuart Pomeranz, Kyler Newby. Catchers: Zach Booker, Allan de San Miguel, Joe Oliveira, Justin Dalles, Gabriel Lino, Michael Ohlman, Caleb Joseph. Position players: Manny Machado, Jonathan Schoop, Jeff Larish, Trent Mummey, Daryl Crozier, Cory Aldridge, Antoan Richardson, Glynn Davis. The Orioles minor league squads will play intrasquad games on March 12 and 13 and begin exhibition games against other teams on March 14.
