Voth hoping shutdown period will eliminate elbow pain

Austin Voth is hoping to begin throwing again next week to test the right elbow that forced him on the injured list yesterday.

Voth is taking a stronger dose of an anti-inflammatory to reduce the swelling.

The Orioles placed Voth on the IL after he allowed two runs and three hits Tuesday in one-third of an inning. He also walked a batter, and Cavan Biggio’s homer was the first that Voth surrendered in his last 18 appearances.

Voth’s previous outing also was a struggle, with two walks in one-third of an inning against the Royals.

“It’s getting better,” he said this morning. “It’s just a matter of calming it down to the point where I can move it without moving something. And from there, I’m not throwing right now, so the next step would be probably throwing in maybe a week to see how it’s doing.”

The decision was made to shut down Voth rather than have him attempt to manage it on the active roster. The Orioles selected Reed Garrett’s contract from Triple-A Norfolk.

“It’s been like off and on,” Voth said. “It started in spring training, got on anti-inflammatories, did some treatments. That seemed to kind of subside a little bit.

“Came back the first month of the season, did the same thing, but both times I was throwing throughout the whole process. This time, I’m not going to throw and see if it will calm down completely.”

An MRI on Voth’s elbow came back clean. He isn’t sure what’s causing the swelling and discomfort.

“It’s just something that comes and goes, I guess,” he said.

“Whatever treatment they’ve been doing in there with the anti-inflammatories seems to kind of like flush it out. So, hopefully this time without throwing, it will definitely knock it out for sure. But it’s just kind of been lingering.”

Voth was able to produce some impressive stretches, and he covered 3 2/3 and 2 1/3 innings in back-to-back appearances in late May. But his ERA grew to 4.94 with a 1.581 WHIP in 23 games.

He couldn’t continue down that path.

“It’s something that I’ve been constantly having to deal with,” he said, “but it’s getting better.”

Meanwhile, manager Brandon Hyde said reliever Mychal Givens felt good after last night’s rehab start at Double-A Bowie, when he allowed one run and two hits in 1 1/3 innings, and will pitch Friday at Triple-A Norfolk.
