Voth to start Tuesday at Baltimore (Nats fall 4-3)

PHILADELPHIA - Nationals manager Davey Martinez announced that right-hander Austin Voth will be called up for Tuesday's first game of the series against the Orioles.

"I like what Austin's done when he was up here and then his last outing down there he pitched really, really well," Martinez said. "I like the fact that he goes out there and he has presence. he has poise. He's throwing the ball well. We're going to give him another opportunity to start."

The 27-year-old has no record and a 5.52 ERA in three starts this season with the Nats. He has shown a 93-95 mph fastball and wants to work on his gloveside location.

In July 11, Voth tossed six shutout innings against Richmond, allowing two hits and one walk with six strikeouts in a 7-2 Harrisburg win.

Martinez also explained the reasoning behind catcher Spencer Kieboom getting a shot to be the third catcher with Max Scherzer on the injured list.

"When Suzuki doesn't play, I like him as a pinch-hitter," Martinez said. "Sometimes I can't use him until late in the game because you don't want to be down to just with one catcher. Now it so happens that if we have a chance to pinch hit him in the sixth inning we can do that with an extra catcher."

Update: Both teams tallied a run in the fourth inning. Anthony Rendon doubled off of Jake Arrieta and came home on a Matt Adams RBI single to right field. Jean Segura doubled off of Nats starter Aníbal Sánchez. J.T. Realmuto then brought Segura in with a run-scoring single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

After four innings, the Nats and the Phillies are tied 1-1.

Update II: Segura hit an RBI single in the fifth and Realmuto a solo homer in the sixth.

Arrieta finished five innings, allowing only one run on four hits with two walks, a hit by pitch and two strikeouts. He threw 88 pitches, 51 for strikes.

After six innings, the Phillies lead the Nats 3-1.

Update III: The Nats took advantage of command issues from Phillies reliever J.D. Hammer. He walked Suzuki and Victor Robles with one out in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Howie Kendrick and Trea Turner dropped in back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game.

Mid-seventh, the Nats and the Phillies even at 3-3.

Update IV: Maikel Franco hit a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the ninth off of Matt Grace. It was his 15th homer of the season. The loss snaps Nats four-game win streak.

Final score: Phillies 4, Nats 3.
