Walk-off win: Jonathan Schoop's homer wins it in ninth for Orioles

It ended with a walk-off homer. Jonathan Schoop homered to left on a 2-2 slider from Tanner Roark with two outs in the last of the ninth as the Orioles beat the Nationals 3-2 tonight in the series opener.

The Orioles failed to get a single hit with a runner in scoring position, but they did post their third walk-off win of the year on Schoop's first career walk-off homer.

Down 2-1, the Orioles tied the game in the last of the eighth. Chris Parmelee led off with a pinch-hit, check-swing infield hit to third. With one out, the Nats brought in left-hander Matt Thornton to face Matt Wieters. Wieters doubled to right-center on the first pitch, scoring Parmelee for the 2-2 tie.

Adam Jones led off the last of the fourth with a homer to left as the Orioles took a 1-0 lead. Jones hit No. 12 on an 82 mph changeup from Gio Gonzalez. It was career homer No. 178, moving him to within one of Hall of Famer Frank Robinson for eighth on the Orioles' all-time list.

The Nationals went 1-for-12 against Chris Tillman the first four innings, then used five hits in the fifth to take the 2-1 lead. Tyler Moore, batting eighth, produced an RBI double and scored on a single by No. 9 hitter Michael A. Taylor.

Tillman went six innings, allowing eight hits and two runs with one walk and six strikeouts. He threw 107 pitches, 71 for strikes.

Gonzalez allowed one run on six hits in six-plus innings. He now has a 3.99 ERA.

The Orioles once again struggled to get the clutch hit. In the last of the seventh, Jimmy Paredes drew a leadoff walk and reached second on a passed ball. But two strikeouts and a pop-up later, he was still at second base.

The Orioles went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position for the night and are 5-for-61 (.082) the last nine games. But they did get a win to improve to 44-42 on the year and to 11-4 against the Nats since 2012.

In the second game of this series on Saturday night, Miguel Gonzalez (7-5, 3.87 ERA) will pitch for the Orioles and right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (7-5, 3.04 ERA) is expected to pitch for Washington.
