It was a night where the Orioles were not sharp. They made two errors and allowed two unearned runs. It appeared there was a mental error or two as well.
But in front of an unusually large Tuesday night crowd, they pulled out yet another extra-inning win.
It ended with one big swing. Manny Machado hit a 1-2 Cory Rasmus pitch out to left field for a 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels in 12 innings. Machado was the leadoff batter of the inning and sent what was left of a crowd of 36,882 home happy.
The Orioles improved to 12-3 with their seventh straight extra-inning win to stay 2 1/2 games ahead of Toronto, who won tonight.
The potential pitcher's duel between Chris Tillman and Jered Weaver did not materialize.
Weaver did not have his usual control tonight, and the Orioles took advantage of that to plate six runs against him on seven hits in five innings. Weaver, who averages 2 1/2 walks per every nine innings, walked four tonight.
Adam Jones' solo homer in the first tied the game 1-1. It was No. 20 for Jones, ten of which have come in the first inning. It's the fourth straight 20-homer season for Jones. J.J. Hardy's RBI single gave the O's a 2-1 lead after one. After the Angels scored twice in the second to lead 3-2, Machado's double in the bottom half tied it back up.
Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer off the right field foul pole in the fourth as the Orioles took a 6-4 lead. It was No. 8 for Markakis. Weaver walked two ahead of that homer.
The Angels' right-hander gave up six runs in 21 innings over his last three starts before the O's got him for six tonight.
Tillman, in his shortest outing since June 5, gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits over five innings. He had pitched to an ERA of 2.40 his previous nine starts.
Tillman's throwing error toward the plate in the second opened the door for two unearned runs for the Angels. Down 6-5 in the seventh, the Angels tied the game on a two-out Josh Hamilton RBI single. His grounder to short with runners on first and third should have been the third out. Hardy fielded the ball and looked to second to get the force, but Ryan Flaherty was not at the bag, and then his throw to first was late as the tying run scored.
With the win, the Orioles improved to a season-high 13 games over .500 at 59-46. They have won 10 of 15 and 22 of their last 33 games.
In the second game of the series Wednesday night, Kevin Gausman (4-3, 3.67 ERA) faces right-hander Garret Richards (11-3, 2.62 ERA).
