Welcome to the majors, Christian Walker.
The kid is having quite a night.
Walker wasn't in the lineup until the Orioles scratched Steve Pearce after batting practice due to a sore right wrist. Walker replaced him at first base and responded with a single and his first major league home run, which broke a 2-2 tie.
Don't be too surprised. It often works out that way.
Walker fell behind 0-2 against Red Sox starter Rubby De La Rosa leading off the bottom of the fourth, took a 91 mph fastball and lined an 83 mph slider over the center field fence - giving him three major league hits in nine at-bats.
Bullpen coach Dom Chiti retrieved the ball for Walker, named the Orioles minor league Player of the Year before they selected his contract from Triple-A Norfolk.
I checked whether Walker received the silent treatment in the dugout. It didn't happen.
The Orioles scored another run in the fourth when Ryan Flaherty doubled, moved to third on a ground ball and scored on Jonathan Schoop's bunt near the mound. Flaherty broke for the plate and Schoop executed the play perfectly.
Heath Hembree replaced De La Rosa in the fifth and served up Adam Jones' second two-run homer of the night. Again, Delmon Young singled ahead of him.
Orioles 6, Red Sox 2.
Jones has six multi-homer games in his career and two this season, the other coming on May 7 against the Rays at Tropicana Field.
The Orioles are 24-0 when they hit three or more home runs.
Update: Nelson Cruz had an RBI double in the seventh on a ball that Jackie Bradley Jr. misplayed in right field.
Young has three hits tonight.
Tillman allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings, with two walks, six strikeouts and a home run. He threw 105 pitches, 67 for strikes.
Tillman retired the last 10 batters he faced. He's allowed three earned runs or fewer in 20 consecutive starts, tying Steve Barber for the second-longest streak in franchise history.
Update II: Game over. The Orioles defeat the Red Sox 7-2 before 43,015 at Camden Yards.
The Orioles are 93-61 overall, 50-30 at home, 44-24 vs. the American League East and 25-0 when they hit three or more home runs.
The Orioles haven't lost consecutive games at home since June 28-29. They have one home game remaining, so the streak will remain intact.
