Werth provides early offense, Roark dealing (Nats win 5-2)

Jayson Werth's first at-bat in his return to the lineup on Wednesday was a double to left field. He continued to contribute offensively in his first trip to the plate tonight.

In the bottom of the second, Jose Lobaton was hit by a pitch with two outs. He limped up the first base line to take his base, but had to leave the game due to a lower left leg injury. Pedro Severino came in to pinch-run and then remained in the game as the catcher.

Tanner Roark allowed a walk in the first inning, but no hits in three innings. He struck out the side to end the third.

In the bottom of the third, Werth drove a ball deep to left-center field. Ender Inciarte leaped at the wall and made a very good catch to prevent extra bases.

After three innings, the Nationals lead the Braves 1-0.

Update: A glimpse into the future of the Nats' outfield speed on offense was on display in the fourth.

Adam Lind singled to lead off. With one out, Victor Robles drove a ball to deep right-center field. Robles showed his plus-plus speed as he ended up at third base with a stand-up triple. Lind scored on the high throw home. Adrián Sanchez walked and Robles scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Severino. Severino showed his speed by beating out the relay and preventing a double play.

Roark has allowed one baserunner - a walk in the first to Freddie Freeman - through four innings.

After four, the Nats lead 3-0.

Update II: The Braves notched their first hit of the game on a clean single to right field by Johan Camargo with two outs in the fifth. In the sixth, Ozzie Albies hit a two-run shot over the left center field wall. His fourth homer of the season came on a 3-2 pitch.

Mid-sixth, the Nats lead the Braves 3-2.

Update III: Lind and Robles singled in the sixth. Adrian Sanchez slapped a two-run double to left field. He is 8-for-13 (.615) with three doubles and 10 RBIs with runners in scoring position.

Roark finished six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. He threw 108 pitches, 64 for strikes.

After six innings, the Nats lead 5-2.

Update IV: Sean Doolittle came on in the ninth and recorded three outs, allowing only a single, for his 18th save with the Nats. He has 21 saves overall.

Final score: Nats 5, Braves 2.
