O's game blog: O's have allowed 68 runs in six games at Yankee Stadium

As the Orioles begin a four-game series in the Bronx tonight, to say the least, the Orioles need to start pitching better against New York.

The Orioles trail 9-6 in the season series. They have a combined 7.49 team ERA in those games and New York is batting .315/.412/.573 against Baltimore pitching with 36 homers and a team OPS of .985 in the 15 games.

The Yankees have scored 120 runs in those games and that is the highest total by any team against any opponent this season. New York's 8.00 runs per game versus the Orioles are the club's second-highest versus an opponent in any year since 1945 (min. 10 games) when they averaged 8.40 runs per game against Cleveland in 1999. The Yankees are 13-1 in their last 14 home series openers against Baltimore.

The Orioles have won just one of six games at Yankee Stadium this season with the Yankees scoring 12 runs or more in four of those games. They have outscored the Orioles 68-30 in those games. The O's team ERA is 10.83 in the Bronx in 2017. O's starters have pitched 25 innings in six games, allowing 41 hits and 33 runs (32 earned).

wade-miley-follow-through-white.jpgO's lefty Wade Miley (8-12, 4.96 ERA) makes his 29th start tonight. Miley, unlike most O's pitchers, has done well versus New York this year. He is 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA in two starts. Over 10 innings he has allowed two earned runs with 12 walks and 11 strikeouts.

In a stat that will probably surprise most, Miley has good numbers this season in AL East games. While his record is 3-5, he has a 2.90 ERA over 10 starts within the division. That ERA is eighth-best among all pitchers with five or more starts against the AL East.

Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (11-11, 4.82 ERA) will make his 28th start for New York. In nine second-half starts, he is 4-3 with a 3.65 ERA. In seven career starts against Baltimore, he is 1-2 with a 3.72 ERA, but New York is 1-6 in those games.

The Yankees are 79-66 for the season, 40-27 at home and 36-27 against the AL East. The Yankees have won eight of 11 games. Their pitchers have allowed two runs or less in 12 of the last 21 contests.

The Orioles are 72-74 and broke their six-game losing streak last night with a 2-1 win in Toronto. Over the last four games, O's starters have an ERA of 3.00. In the six games of a 1-5 road trip, the O's have scored just 11 runs on a .181 batting average. Their team ERA is 3.65 on the trip.

The Orioles Trey Mancini tripled in the first inning at Rogers Centre last night. Mancini raised his slugging percentage to 1.000 in 29 first-inning at bats with his triple. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Mancini now owns the highest first-inning slugging percentage among the 241 players with at least 20 at-bats in the first inning this season.
