Wieters on his solid season and recent longball surge

Matt Wieters has now homered in back-to-back games for the Orioles and has hit five homers in his last 12 games. Wieters' next homer will be his 20th on the year. He has 19 this season in 457 at-bats. Pretty impressive when you compare it to the fact he hit 20 combined homers in 800 at-bats during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Wieters said he is not sure why he is hitting more homers now and there is not one key reason for the power surge. "I don't think so. I think it's just power seems to come in stretches," Wieters said. "There's no real reason to explain why or how, but I think the main thing is just you continue to do what you're doing, you don't try and hit home runs and you just continue to stay with your good swing." From July 18 to August 13, Wieters went 21 games without a homer. But since August 15, he has hit eight in the last 24 games. "I don't think I can remember back to those 21 games, but it could've been a lot of things," he said. "I think you put work in, in the cage and sometimes it's just going to click, and right now, the power swing feels pretty good. But at the same time, you've still got to do the work and you try to hit everything when you go up there. That's the goal." On the year, in 127 games, Wieters is batting .260 with 25 doubles, 19 homers, 61 RBIs and an OPS of .762. Wieters is putting the finishing touches on a solid season, one where he made the All-Star team, has been among the league's top defensive catchers and now he is ending it on an upswing at the bat. "I've definitely made progress," he said. "I definitely feel some improvement from last year, but at the same time, there's a lot of room for improvement. That's what's great about baseball is no matter how good you are, you're failing seven out of 10 times and there's always something you can get better at."
