As you have probably read, the Orioles' players were saying plenty of great things about the amazing crowd at Camden Yards last night. The sellout of 46,298 was roaring throughout the game.
Matt Wieters was asked again today about the atmosphere in the ballpark last night.
"It was the best I've played in front of here and I think it will be similar the rest of the series. But we have to focus on tonight's game. It we keep winning, they'll keep coming out," Wieters said.
"It gives you energy and a adrenaline rush. Really, when you get that in September, it can make the body feel like it's April again and it can give you that second wind that you need to carry you through to the playoffs."
Wieters is carrying a heavy load, catching so many games, but he insists he is not tired or wearing down at all right now.
"My body is probably better this year than any year in the past," he said. "Because we are in that playoff push, you will play through some things because of the situation."
Wieters said he was confident that he would see Mark Reynolds' bat get on a hot streak. Hot may not do it justice right now. Over his last seven games, Reynolds is 11-for-26 with eight homers and 16 RBIs. In his last four games against the Yankees, he is 7-for-14 with six homers and 10 RBIs.
"Mark is a unique player," Wieters said. "When he gets hot he's one of the best hitters in the game. That is something everyone knew when he wasn't swinging the bat like this earlier in the year. Once he gets on a tear, he can carry a team. We've all known he could have that tear and it's coming at the right time now."
Even though his batting average is not where he would want it, Wieters has knocked in 20 runs his last 25 games. Against New York this year, he is batting .404 (23-for-57) with three doubles, four homers, eight RBIs and an OPS of 1.144.
Wieters was asked just how confident the Orioles are right now.
"I think belief is a better word than confidence," he said. "When you get to this point, you have been through ups and downs throughout the year and been through streaks where you have played really well. You can get that belief that, that is how we're going to play a good game every night."
