Wieters on the last out, Davis on the win, Hunter on the save

A few minutes after he was involved in the play that ended the game, Matt Wieters talked about catching Kelly Johnson stealing and his throw to J.J. Hardy that ended the O's 4-2 win over Tampa Bay. "(Kelly) Johnson got a pretty good jump, but I was just going to try and throw it as hard as I could," Wieters said. "Really, all the credit goes to J.J. That was one heckuva pick he made. "I've seen him do that before. He spoils you a little bit as a catcher. You know if you get it in the vicinity, he'll have a good chance to make a play for you. I knew it came out low, but you keep watching it because of the kind of hands our shortstop has." The Orioles needed a win tonight to avoid a three-game sweep and they got it. "Big win," Wieters said. "You'd like to get a series, but the only thing we could do tonight is win one game. Wei-Yin (Chen) threw the ball great and we got enough runs to give him some support. Wieters talked about a ninth inning where the O's used three pitchers, but Jim Johnson was not one of them and they closed the game out. "It's big. Their first two guys put great at-bats up there and Tommy (Hunter) came in and just did his job," Wieters said. Chris Davis talked about the win to salvage the series finale. "It was big not to get swept and carry a little bit of momentum into the off-day. We have another big series with Oakland and a huge road trip after that." Davis said the win was much more important than him tying Jim Gentile for third on the O's single-season homer list after he hit No. 46. "You know, team goals come before individual goals," Davis said. "I'm happy to be swinging the bat well, but even happier to get the win. There are frustrations when you are not winning games, but at the same time, you are going to get another chance the next day. You have to be able to turn the page and pick it up and go the next day." He said he got pretty excited seeing the game end with Wieters throwing out a runner. "It fired me up. Thought my heart was about to explode in my chest a there for a minute. Another nail biter, but that is what you expect down the stretch, close games and a playoff-type atmosphere," Davis said. Hunter said he was not surprised that he was in for a save situation. "No, being a pitcher you have to be ready to go," he said. "He got me up with (Brian) Matusz and it looked like that was the way he was going to go tonight. It is just getting outs. It is what it is. Whether it's the sixth, ninth or seventh, you just have to get outs." Hunter was also fired up by how the game ended. "Wiety has a hose and J.J has some of the best hands in the game," Hunter said. "That was pretty awesome. 'That a boy. Wiety,' I thought I said - and a few other choice words after that I hope didn't get on TV."
