Wieters survives nasty collision; O's down 3-2 after Markakis HR

Dana Eveland is littering the bases and running up his pitch count, so he's not likely to stick around for the late innings of tonight's game. Eveland has allowed three runs and four hits, walked five (one intentional), struck out two and hit two batters in four innings. He's thrown 71 pitches, only 37 for strikes. Eveland retired the side in order in the first, but it's been a massive struggle otherwise. The Rays loaded the bases with no outs in the second and settled for one run on Sean Rodriguez's double play grounder. Eveland walked two in the third, and the Rays sent eight batters to the plate and scored twice in the fourth. No. 9 hitter Elliot Johnson singled to right with the bases loaded, the ball eluding a leaping Nick Markakis. Matt Joyce scored, but Rodriguez was thrown out at the plate - 9-4-2. Rodriguez plowed into Matt Wieters, lowering his left shoulder into the catcher's face. It was a violent collision, the kind that can cause serious injury, but Wieters held onto the ball. Manager Buck Showalter and head athletic trainer Richie Bancells checked on Wieters, probably to make sure part of Rodriguez's sleeve wasn't caught between his front teeth. Not many catchers hold onto that ball. Not many retain consciousness. Eveland walked Ben Zobrist intentionally and hit Carlos Pena unintentionally with the bases loaded to increase the Rays' lead to 3-1. The Orioles' only run came on Adam Jones' 10th home run leading off the second inning. Update: Eveland turned in a quality start by definition. He allowed three runs and five hits in six innings, with six walks (one intentional), two strikeouts and two hit batters. He threw 95 pitches, 51 for strikes. Darren O'Day has replaced Eveland. Markakis hit his third home run in four games to cut the Rays lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth.
