Wieters' two-run single off Chapman leads O's to comeback win

The Orioles offense was frustrated for a long time on Sunday afternoon. Through seven innings, then into the eighth and then into a rain delay of 1 hour, 37 minutes.

But that all ended when Matt Wieters delivered a huge two-run single off Aroldis Chapman. A third run would score on an error on the play as the Orioles rallied to beat the Yankees 3-1 on Sunday at Camden Yards.

Before the rain delay, Dellin Betances started the O's eighth with a 1-0 lead, but walked Mark Trumbo and Chris Davis singled. After Nolan Reimold struck out, the rains came - and so did the long delay.

Chapman was on the mound when play resumed and fanned Jonathan Schoop with a 100 mph pitch. But Francisco Pena singled to right to load the bases. Then Wieters came up and singled to center on a 0-2 pitch at 101 mph. The throw home from center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury bounced over the catcher's head as a third run scored. Just like that, three runs on one play off of one of the best closers in the game.

Much earlier, after pitching two scoreless to start his day, O's right-hander Kevin Gausman allowed a run in the New York third as the Yankees went ahead 1-0. Ellsbury singled with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout. He scored on an Alex Rodriguez two-out RBI single. It was Rodriguez's third RBI of the series.

The Orioles, meanwhile, could not get much going against New York's CC Sabathia, and when they did, it ended in frustration. They loaded the bases in the third and fifth innings. But each time the team's homer and RBI leader, Trumbo, struck out on three pitches.

Sabathia blanked the Orioles for seven innings on May 4 and held them scoreless through five innings plus one batter today. The Orioles were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring and left seven on base in those five at-bats.

Sabathia gave up just two hits with six walks and five strikeouts. He lowered his season ERA to 2.58 and he has pitched 12 scoreless innings this year against the Orioles.

Gausman went six innings, allowing seven hits and one run with two walks and five strikeouts. New York went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position against him. Today, he provided the Orioles with just their second quality start in the last 11 games and only the sixth in the past 20 games. O's starters had an ERA of 6.68 over the previous 19 games.

T.J. McFarland got the win with two scoreless innings of relief, and Zach Britton picked up his 17th save with a perfect ninth.

But the Orioles would pull this game with that rally in the eighth and end a long day with a win. They improved to 32-23 and tie Boston for first place. The Orioles welcome the defending World Series champion Kansas City Royals to Baltimore on Monday night.
