Wrapping up a 14-11, 10-inning loss

NEW YORK - The Orioles won't have much time to dwell on tonight's meltdown, on how leads of 9-1 and 11-4 couldn't hold up. They've got a quick turnaround with a 1:05 p.m. game Saturday.

Sleep fast. The nightmare already transpired.

Matt Holliday hit a three-run homer off left-hander Jayson Aquino with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Yankees a 14-11 win over the Orioles and create a tie for first place in the American League East.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this is the Yankees' first win after trailing by at least eight runs since April 21, 2012 in Boston. According to the YES Network, it's their first win at home under the same circumstances since May 16, 2006 against the Rangers.

The Orioles have lost 12 of their last 13 series-opening games at Yankee Stadium dating back to the beginning of the 2013 season.

This is the Orioles' first loss after scoring 11 runs or more since July 29, 2006, when the White Sox beat them 13-11.

Kevin Gausman lamented the three runs he allowed in the sixth inning tonight. Vidal Nuño served up a grand slam to Jacoby Ellsbury in the seventh. Brad Brach blew his first save, unable to hold an 11-8 lead. Aquino walked the first two batters he faced before Holliday sent everyone home.

Manager Buck Showalter preferred to dwell on the positives, including how Manny Machado came within a triple of the cycle and Mark Trumbo hit a grand slam, his first home run since opening day, as part of a three-hit night.

Let's get to the quotes.

Showalter on whether he was confident bullpen could hold the leads: "You never assume anything. Brad's been great this year and will be again, Darren is coming on, pitching well, Mychal got some big outs. We swung the bats well. Some good things happened tonight for us with Trum and Manny kind of getting back to their level. That's good to see, and I'll dwell on that tonight. But some guys who have been real good for us for quite a while had their challenges just like hitters do.

"You've got great track record with Manny and Trum, and they showed you some things tonight. Brad's been one of the reasons why we're here and will be again."

Showalter on Brach: "The walk gave them some momentum to lead off the inning, but there's a lot more than Brad Brach here tonight. I thought the home run we gave up to Ellsbury was probably one of the key blows, but there's a lot of them. We came back and scored again. I was real proud of the guys offensively. Kind of played to what we're capable of. Jon (Schoop) had some big at-bats. A lot of good things happened tonight. I'm not going to live in that gloom-and-doom world."

Showalter on Aquino: "Just command. Was just missing down, trying not to make a mistake. He's a young pitcher. I thought he might find his step after striking out Headley, but it was a bad matchup there on paper. He's good against right-handed hitters when he's right."

Showalter on whether club will need to call up a reliever: "I don't know yet. On the surface, probably not, but we've got some length tomorrow and most everybody back we wanted to use, with one or two exceptions. But Roger (McDowell) and I are going to sit down and take a look at it shortly. The quick turnaround to a 1 o'clock game is kind of tough."

Showalter on Trumbo: "It's kind of like, you see guys with a great track record that we think highly of. He and Manny had a big night. And a guy who has been rock solid for us had an off night with Brad. And that's just part of it. You try to keep the ebb and flow and realize that reality. That's a good team over there and we're a good team."

Showalter on Britton's outing at Double-A Bowie: "I got a statistical report. Said he felt good. Said he felt rusty, from what he told the trainer over there. Obviously, you guys saw the line, so we'll re-examine it tomorrow. That's one of the reasons why we wanted to wait. Statistically tells you one thing, but there's a lot more to the story than that. So, we will wait and collect the information tomorrow."

Brach on club losing big leads: "Yeah, it's tough. I think that's the worst part about it. We were up by so much there and finally Darren came in and settled things down and I just ... The leadoff walk, I felt, was the bad thing. I know I gave up the home run later, but with a three-run lead I've got to attack the hitter. I can't be messing around like I did. You just don't want to lose those games."

Brach on whether anything about him was different: "No, I think I was kind of rushing out there a little bit. I think I kind of got away from my game plan, the scouting reports that I had kind of come up with myself. Just a couple of pitches I wish I could take back. Nothing different, just didn't execute."

Brach on whether he expected to pitch while Orioles had big leads: "You're always ready. It's the major leagues. It's a small park here. Leads can evaporate quick, especially in the AL East. You have to be ready to go. It doesn't matter the score.

"Obviously at 9-1 you're not thinking you are, but it's the AL East, so any team is a couple dinks and a blast away from being a few runs back into it. And even then it wasn't in the back of my mind that I wasn't going to get in. I'm always ready whenever Buck makes the phone call."

Brach on the craziness of the game: "I think it was the first real warm game, and the ball was definitely jumping today. Just a lot of runs scored there. I've got to hold the lead there. That's about it."

Gausman on comparing this outing to his last two: "I felt really good. I was cruising through five. I give up the solo home run to Judge, but those things are going to happen. Bad pitch, kind of came back to the middle of the plate. I'm more pissed about the fact that I gave up three in the sixth. Kind of let them get off the hook. Let them back in the ballgame.

"Darren and Brad shouldn't even be getting in the game, especially when we're up 9-1. I've got to be able to kind of put my foot on their throat right there."

Gausman on giving up the sixth-inning runs: "I think just having that starter mentality of knowing that I should have gone deeper in the game and saved some guys. That sixth inning was pretty bad. I was kind of cruising through five, but that sixth kind of went back to what I've been doing the last couple of outings. A lot of fastballs coming back in the zone. Yeah, that's on me."

Gausman on disappointment of outcome: "Anytime you kind of give up a lead like that as a pitching staff like that, we're not super happy, but you've got to just flush it. We've got another game tomorrow. Day game, too. We've got to forget about this one quick. Obviously, it's going to be some tough games between these two teams. These games mean a lot early on, but as you can see, it's going to be a grind against them all year."

Trumbo on busting out tonight: "Felt pretty good to contribute. It wasn't enough, but hopefully that can be a nice way to get things moving in a better direction."

Trumbo on whether he was having better at-bats leading into tonight: "Yeah, I was seeing the ball pretty well. The results weren't there, but any time I'm getting a good look at it and taking some of the close pitches, that's a good sign."

Trumbo on watching last couple of innings unfold: "Just no big deal. The weird thing is our offense kind of broke out and it flip-flopped because our bullpen has been doing a tremendous job and we haven't been scoring that many runs. So, yeah, we're good."
