SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles manager Buck Showalter confirmed today that Matt Wieters will catch on opening day.
Wieters was behind the plate for today's 6-1 win over the Braves, reaching on a single, double and walk, driving in a run and also stealing a base.
No cuts are being made today. Showalter has given players partial travel schedules, such as flying to Philadelphia on Friday, going to Baltimore afterward and waiting for their next assignments.
Yovani Gallardo turned in his best results today after allowing one hit in five scoreless innings and facing the minimum number of batters.
"He and Matt worked well together," Showalter said. "I think that's kind of how you're going to see him pitch. Maybe a tick or two more stuff when the big lights go on.
"Yovani was good. He was in a good rhythm. You could tell he had a little start of the season look on his face."
Tyler Wilson followed Gallardo and allowed one run and struck out three batters in three innings.
"I thought Wilson was good, especially you always look after a guy's made the club," Showalter said.
Wilson found out today that he's made the club.
"Very excited, very excited, very grateful for the opportunity, and I'm looking forward to opening day and every day thereafter, just getting after it and winning some games," Wilson said.
His role will be defined later. He could begin the season in the bullpen and make the April 10 start in Kevin Gausman's absence.
"The biggest decision is behind us now, and like I've always told you guys, I'll just take the ball whenever they give it to me and I'm just looking forward to going out there, getting outs, competing and just winning games," Wilson said.
An added bonus is having his friend, Mike Wright, also make the team. Wright will start the fourth game.
"It's pretty good. It's really cool," Wilson said. "There's a lot of guys that I wish we were all on the opening day roster. Obviously, I wish the number could be bigger than 25, and they have some really difficult decisions, so like I said I'm grateful that I fell in that number, and Mike as well.
"I'm just looking forward to moving forward from here, but it's always difficult to see guys not make it. I'm just trying to be conscious of that and once again just be thankful for the opportunity."
Showalter called Wilson into his office and gave him the news after Wright was told of his good fortune.
"I've said this to you guys a lot before and I really do mean it. I stay focused on the things that I can control," Wilson said. "As soon as you start having expectations for one thing or another is when you let down in some way. I try and stay focused on my game, and getting better and let them make those decisions that are out of my hands.
"Ultimately, it's about getting better, and you talk about being ready whenever the bell rings because it could be opening day or it could be 50 games into the season. I've got to make sure that I stay in the right mindset. All of us do. Have to make sure we stay in the right mindset and be able to do our part when we're called upon."
Today's game also included a bunt single by Pedro Alvarez against the shift, as Wieters did twice last night.
"Pete got his bunt down this spring. He's on the board," Showalter said. "He's actually been watching how Matt hangs in there. Doesn't try to hurry to get out of the batter's box. You've got to sit there and take your placement. If you get your placement, you don't have to hurry to first."
Wieters had his two bunt singles last night and a stolen base today. The catcher is playing small ball.
"We talk about taking what they give you and taking the scoreboard," Showalter said. "The scoreboard will tell you when those things should happen. Situational.
"Actually during the season I'd like to see Pete swing there. It worked out because it's 0-0. I know he's been working on it and get a good positive thought on it coming out of here."
Jimmy Paredes watched the last few outs from the bullpen area. He's headed to the disabled list with a bone bruise in his left wrist, but Showalter said he's not out of the Orioles' plans.
"He's got to get that last discomfort out," Showalter said. "I'll bet you that when we leave it will be shortly thereafter he'll start swinging the bat. That's what we're hoping. He's been forgotten by some, but not by us. It's been a pretty long injury."
Update: The Orioles have optioned reliever Oliver Drake to Triple-A Norfolk. With the move, there are 37 players remaining in camp, including six non-roster invitees, assuming Miguel Gonzalez is released.
