Yovani Gallardo will have an MRI on Sunday in Baltimore

KANSAS CITY - When the Orioles put right-hander Yovani Gallardo on the disabled list this afternoon, they announced that he was dealing with right shoulder bicep tendinitis.

Manager Buck Showalter told reporters today that was an initial diagnosis and the club will learn much more about the full extent of Gallardo's injury when he has an MRI tomorrow in Baltimore.

Gallardo-Throws-Black-Sidebar.jpg"He'll have an MRI and then see Dr. (Michael) Jacobs around noon tomorrow," Showalter said. "You know, what did they put on it (in labeling the injury)? Nobody really knows. You have to put something on the sheet. The team doctor for them (the Royals) saw him. Until we get the MRI and Dr. Jacobs sees it, you don't know exactly what it is.

"I don't think anybody knows exactly what is causing the symptoms he has. It is not acute pain or anything. It wasn't like he was feeling acute pain or anything. There was general weakness there."

As Gallardo was placed on the DL, the Orioles activated reliever Brian Matusz to take his roster spot.

Gallardo allowed three runs in the first inning of Friday's 4-2 O's loss and worked only two innings. He threw 45 pitches, giving up five hits and four runs before T.J. McFarland came on to pitch in the top of the third. Gallardo flew back to Baltimore and will undergo an examination by Dr. Jacobs.

Gallardo is 1-1 with an ERA of 7.00 in four starts for the Orioles. Opposing batters have hit .319 against Gallardo this year and his ERA is 15.75 in the first inning of his four starts. He has allowed 13 runs in 13 innings his last three starts.

So the Orioles will know much on Gallardo at some point tomorrow.

"Oh, yeah," Showalter said. "Because of the baseline (on a previous MRI) of the other stuff we have on him from the original physical. We'll see if there is anything different going on there.

"I'm hoping, a lot like (Kevin) Gausman, a lot like Jason Garcia, if you remember, they give them an injection and you kind of start over a little bit. I'm hoping that is a product of tomorrow."

Matusz has been on the disabled list with a lower back strain. He made five minor league rehab appearances. Over 10 innings, he allowed eight runs, but six of those runs came in one inning on April 6 for Double-A Bowie. In Matusz's last two games, both with Single-A Frederick, he pitched seven innings, allowing three hits and one run with no walks and 12 strikeouts.

Matusz could be used to pitch multiple innings tonight if the Orioles need that after Gallardo's two-inning start last night. Showalter said everyone is available in the bullpen tonight except McFarland, who pitched five innings last night.

Hyun Soo Kim will start for the Orioles tonight for the first time since April 13, batting ninth and playing in left field.

"It's time," Showalter said. "I plan on playing Ryan (Flaherty) tomorrow. I just don't want those guys to sit too long. We're going to need them."

Showalter said he continues to have several conversations with Kim.

"There are so many new things being thrown at him," Showalter said. "You keep that line open. You never know what culturally - do they think you're mad at them? You never know. I don't care whether you are from Korea or California, it's the unknown that drives players crazy. There are a lot of new things being thrown at him."
