Duquette will meet the press Tuesday

Duquette will meet the press Tuesday
The Orioles have scheduled an 11 a.m. press conference Tuesday at the warehouse to introduce Dan Duquette to the local media. The press conference will air live on MASN and will be streamed live on MASNsports.com. The Orioles have given Duquette the title of executive vice president of baseball operations, which wasn't on my short list. I kept referring to the job as "general manager" or "president of baseball operations." I may have to abbreviate it to executive VP of baseball ops....

What needs to be done (updated)

What needs to be done (updated)
Is anyone else burned out from all this general manager talk? I'd like to go the rest of the year without typing the word "candidate." I'd like to go the rest of my life without typing it, but I don't know whether Dan Duquette has that kind of staying power. My assumption is that Duquette will be introduced Tuesday as the new president of baseball operations. You can be sure that it will happen this week. The search is over. We can put that "short list" to bed. Duquette won't...

Source: Orioles and Duquette reach agreement (updated twice)
The Orioles and Dan Duquette have agreed to terms on a contract that will make him the organization's new president of baseball operations, according to an industry source. The deal is done, according to the source, and the Orioles are expected to make the announcement as early as tomorrow. Duquette met again this morning with owner Peter Angelos, his third interview in three days. He returned to Baltimore yesterday after his initial meeting, making him only the second candidate to be...

The waiting is the hardest part (updated with Sunday meeting)
Owner Peter Angelos met with Dan Duquette late into the night, and I turned off my laptop without any word on whether a deal had been struck. Not that anyone is burning up my phone with updates. Keeping me in the loop isn't a high priority. As of early this morning, it appears that nothing has been finalized, but we're still heading in that direction. I don't feel any need to dust off my list of other potential candidates. Yankees scouting director Damon Oppenheimer comes into play only if...

A few more thoughts on Duquette

A few more thoughts on Duquette
The reaction here to Dan Duquette's second interview with the Orioles is mixed, to say the least. Some fans respect the work he's done in the past - especially the one-sided trades - and think he'll be a major asset. Others think the work was done too far in the past and he's no longer relevant. I just want the situation resolved, so I'm feeling a small sense of relief for selfish reasons. Duquette is meeting tonight with owner Peter Angelos, and the common belief is the Orioles...

O's nearing deal with Duquette

O's nearing deal with Duquette
I've received confirmation that Dan Duquette is heading back to Baltimore, and the Orioles could be drawing close to naming their new president of baseball operations. No contract has been offered, according to a source, but the two sides will attempt to hammer out a deal this weekend. ESPN's Tim Kurkjian first reported that Duquette was returning to Baltimore. Duquette interviewed yesterday, and I'm told that his detailed presentation impressed everyone in the room. One member of the...

Will Duquette get done?

Will Duquette get done?
If you know me and this blog, you know that I was dragged kicking and screaming into the Twitter world. I had little choice. My profession dictated it. Well, so did my bosses, but you know what I mean. I was confused and amused by how many people simultaneously tweeted last night that Red Sox assistant general manager Allard Baird declined the opportunity to interview with the Orioles for the position of president of baseball operations. I thought he was on a conference call, but he actually...

Latest GM non-update update (Baird out of picture)
I can't let you go to bed later tonight without another entry about the Orioles' search for a president of baseball operations. As of right now - check the time on this entry - the Orioles haven't scheduled any other interviews for the weekend. Of course, that could change. I've heard that they really want to sit down with Red Sox assistant GM Allard Baird. And they received permission from the Yankees to interview scouting director Damon Oppenheimer. Multiple people close to the...

Twins deny permission on Radcliff
The Twins have denied the Orioles permission to interview Mike Radcliff for the position of president of baseball operations, according to an industry source. According to the same source, the Twins denied permission because of internal reorganization and promotions that could be in the works. Radcliff currently serves as vice president for player personnel for the Twins, but his title may now change. The Orioles will interview former Expos and Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette later...

General manager and free agent chatter

General manager and free agent chatter
For those of you keeping score at home, the Orioles will interview former Expos and Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette today, making him the sixth candidate to meet with the search committee. As long as you're keeping score, Duquette is only the third candidate who's still in play, joining John Stockstill and Scott Proefrock. You've seen a variety of names float past your computer screens. There's no exact list of remaining candidates. The Orioles are expected to interview Red Sox...

Dan Duquette interviewing Friday, waiting on others (updated)

Dan Duquette interviewing Friday, waiting on others (updated)
The Orioles have arranged for former Expos and Red Sox executive Dan Duquette to fly into Baltimore and interview tomorrow morning for the position of president of baseball operations. Duquette, who twice traded for pitcher Pedro Martinez, will be the sixth candidate interviewed by the search committee. Duquette, the cousin of former Orioles vice president of baseball operations Jim Duquette, began his baseball career in 1980 as a scouting assistant with the Braves. While he was the Expos'...

Taking a closer look at two candidates

Taking a closer look at two candidates
The Orioles will interview their fifth candidate today for the job of president of baseball operations. One of them took another job. Another one kept his old job. Two of them remain in contention. Where it stops, nobody knows. I told you last night that the Orioles have sought permission to interview Tampa Bay Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, Minnesota Twins vice president of player personnel Mike Radcliff and Chicago White Sox vice president/assistant...

More on the expanded GM search

More on the expanded GM search
I can make one promise: The Orioles won't introduce their new president of baseball operations tomorrow. They will, however, interview former team executive Scott Proefrock, 51, an assistant general manager with the Philadelphia Phillies. Proefrock served as the Orioles' director of baseball administration from 2006 until 2008, handling a lot of the contract responsibilities. The Orioles also have asked permission to interview Tampa Bay executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew...

Orioles expanding interview list (updated)

Orioles expanding interview list (updated)
This will be a very quick update on the Orioles' general manager search, since I'm less than an hour away from The start of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Report on MASN. The Orioles are placing calls to numerous teams seeking permission to interview candidates to replace Andy MacPhail. I've heard that the teams include the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies. That's only a partial roll call. It's fair to speculate that one of the names is Mike...

Orioles claim O'Day off waivers; Fox a free agent
The Orioles claimed right-hander Darren O'Day off waivers from the Texas Rangers, continuing their roster infatuation with the American League champions. O'Day, 29, was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 16 games and 16 2/3 innings this season. He also was 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA, four walks and 27 strikeouts in 18 games and 21 1/3 innings with Double-A Frisco (one game) and Triple-A Round Rock (17). O'Day, a submarine-stylist similar to Chad Bradford, also has pitched for the Angels in 2008, the Mets in...

Wieters on Wieters

Wieters on Wieters
Catcher Matt Wieters was made available to reporters in a conference call earlier this morning. Here are some of his comments regarding his first Rawlings Gold Glove Award: "I take a lot of pride in the award," he said. "It's definitely something I always work at to get better, and to be able to win a Gold Glove, I'm honored to be in the same class as the other great catchers in the game defensively. It's an honor, for sure. I'm very blessed to be able to win the award this early in my...

The search isn't over

The search isn't over
I opened yesterday's entry by saying that we might have an announcement on a new president of baseball operations, and I came close to being right. An offer was made to Blue Jays assistant general manager Tony LaCava. He turned it down yesterday. Otherwise... LaCava returned home, huddled with his family and broke the news to the Orioles that he wasn't leaving the Blue Jays. I'm sick of this topic, but it won't go away. Dodgers executive De Jon Watson is waiting to find out whether...

A few words from Tony LaCava

A few words from Tony LaCava
I just got off the phone with Tony LaCava, who earlier today turned down the Orioles' offer to become their president of baseball operations. LaCava insisted that, in the end, he didn't want to leave Toronto. And he understands that most people will think he's crazy. "I really enjoy my job in Toronto, and I have a GM that I work with (Alex Anthopoulos) who's like a brother to me," LaCava said. "We're very, very close. We have a really good dynamic between us. I wasn't looking to...

LaCava staying with Blue Jays (updated twice)
Tony LaCava has decided to remain with the Toronto Blue Jays as assistant general manager, and the Orioles are discussing the possibility of bringing in more outside candidates. Apparently, LaCava was ready to accept an offer from the Orioles until flying back into Baltimore yesterday for a second meeting. I'm told the issues that cropped up for LaCava didn't involve ownership or manager Buck Showalter. However, a deal couldn't be reached. The Orioles have interviewed four candidates,...

Wieters and Markakis: A Gold Glove story (Hardy denied)
Orioles catcher Matt Wieters can add "Gold Glove winner" to his expanding resume. Named to his first All-Star team over the summer, Wieters just learned that he's also won his first Rawlings Gold Glove Award. Wieters beat out American League finalists A.J. Pierzynski and Alex Avila for the award, which was announced on ESPN2. He's the first catcher to win the award in club history. Nick Markakis also won his first Gold Glove in right field, beating out the Angels' Torii Hunter and the...
