After whirlwind offseason, Valaika settles in with Orioles
Pat Valaika is settling in nicely with his new team. Injuries to other players opened up some playing time for him and as more at-bats were coming, so have more hits. He went 4-for-4 last night in the Orioles' 9-5 win over the New York Mets. Last season with Colorado, Valaika had four different stints with the big league team, getting 86 total plate appearances over that time. He already has 86 plate appearances with the Orioles. He's batting .275/.318/.488 with two doubles, five homers, nine...

Games or not, O's turn Bowie site into strong player development experience

Games or not, O's turn Bowie site into strong player development experience
Were this a "normal" baseball season, players would be getting into games on the farm and getting plenty of at-bats and innings in during minor league games. It would provide chances to improve their skills and advance their careers. Without that this year, the Orioles have tried to develop a strong Plan B at their alternate site at Prince George's Stadium, home of the Double-A Bowie Baysox. Players get at-bats and innings, but against players from their own farm system and organization. But...

O's game blog: The homestand begins
After a stretch of playing 13 straight games against American League East teams, the Orioles begin a two-game home series against the New York Mets tonight. This begins a stretch of 12 straight games through Sept. 13 against New York teams. They will meet the Mets four times and play the Yankees eight times. The Orioles went 3-10 in the stretch of games against Boston, Tampa Bay and Toronto. They are 8-13 this season against AL clubs and 7-6 versus the National League. They are 7-2 against the...

There are reasons to not give up on Cole Sulser

There are reasons to not give up on Cole Sulser
On a team that didn't have a true closer going into the 2020 season, right-hander Cole Sulser, a veteran before this year of only 7 1/3 major league innings, was thrust into the role. He's had some big blow-ups recently and now has been moved out of the closer's role. But in my humble opinion, he certainly should not be moved off the team. The Orioles need to give him lower-leverage situations to pitch in and get him back on track, and that is the new plan. One wrinkle in the mix is that the...

A closer look at Keegan Akin's start, plus a trade note

A closer look at Keegan Akin's start, plus a trade note
Orioles lefty pitching prospect Keegan Akin threw a very strong game today against Toronto in Buffalo. In fact, he became just the third O's starter on the year to not allow an earned run. He gave up two unearned runs in 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision. The Orioles broke a five-game losing streak and avoided a four-game sweep and winless road trip. They beat Toronto 4-3 in 11 innings on RBI doubles by José Iglesias and Bryan Holaday in the 11th. In the last of the 11th, Toronto scored one...

O's game blog: Keegan Akin makes his MLB starting debut
Through the season's first 30 games, the Orioles did not suffer a walk-off loss. But that has happened twice in the last three games and in the same series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Today the Orioles (14-19) will need a win in Buffalo to avoid a second series sweep by Toronto (18-14) this year. This would be a four-game sweep and Toronto is already 6-0 versus the Orioles. When not playing Baltimore, Toronto has a 12-14 record. When not playing Toronto, the Orioles have a 14-13 record. The...

Another tough loss caps eventful day in Birdland

Another tough loss caps eventful day in Birdland
When the local nine lets a lead get away in the eighth inning and gets tied and in the ninth inning and loses, let's just say there have been better days in Birdland. But it was an active day and certainly not without some potentially very positive developments. * Let's start with Ryan Mountcastle. He hit two homers and each one gave the Orioles the lead. It looked like he had some guy chasing balls out near the highway beyond left field. His first homer went 420 feet and his second 410 feet....

Yep, it happened again: O's lose in a walk-off

Yep, it happened again: O's lose in a walk-off
On the day Ryan Mountcastle hit his first two homers, both giving the Orioles the lead, would it be enough to end a four-game losing streak? Mountcastle blasted No. 1 on a 2-2 changeup off Tanner Roark in the second. That gave the O's a 1-0 lead. He hit No. 2 off a Roark fastball with a man on in the sixth. That gave the O's a 4-3 lead. But after Toronto tied it 4-4 in the last of the eighth, the O's had to take the lead again. And they did in the ninth on an infield RBI single up the middle...

O's game blog: Looking to snap a four-game losing streak
With a record of 0-2 in this series and 0-4 on this road trip, the Orioles play the Toronto Blue Jays again today in Buffalo. The Blue Jays shut out Baltimore 5-0 yesterday as O's hitters went 5-for-32 with just one extra-base hit, a double. During a four-game losing streak the Orioles have scored just nine runs. An offense that averaged 5.35 runs per game while going 12-8 its first 20 games has slowed. The Birds are scoring 3.42 runs per game the last 12 games while going 2-10. Perhaps today...

César Valdez on return to MLB: "One of the best days of my life"
During an otherwise kind of drab 5-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday night, the Orioles unveiled a 35-year-old right-hander pitching in the big leagues for the first time in over three years. A veteran throwing a huge assortment of off-speed pitches that fooled not only Blue Jays hitters but the Statcast system that tracks pitches and pitch speed. When César Valdez came on with two on and none out to replace Alex Cobb in the fifth, he got three straight outs to strand the runners. He...

Bullpen coach shows confidence in Sulser, talks on other pitchers
During pregame interviews on Saturday, it's pretty clear the Orioles still believe in right-handed reliever Cole Sulser. He has a 3.68 ERA and a 1.091 WHIP in 11 games. He has saved five games, but also has had some big issues late in games, like giving up a two-run walk-off homer to Toronto's Randal Grichuk on Friday night. Darren Holmes, the O's first-year bullpen coach, added a vote of support for Sulser yesterday. "His preparation for each day, he's at the top of the shelf," Holmes...

O's game blog: Looking to get a win on this road trip
The Orioles have played three close games on this road trip, but lost them all. They began the trip with the best road record in the majors at 8-1. But they lost 4-2 and 4-3 to Tampa Bay and 5-4 last night in 10 innings to Toronto. Tonight they play the Blue Jays again in Buffalo in the second of the four-game series. The Orioles (14-17) have lost three games in a row and nine of 11 since they were 12-8. Of those nine losses, four have come by one run and one by two runs. They've lost the...

A few notes after a walk-off loss to Blue Jays

A few notes after a walk-off loss to Blue Jays
Grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory, the Orioles were an out away from a solid win last night. But they couldn't get it. An out that would have given them a close win during a string of close losses, would have given them their first win over Toronto and would have pulled them within a 1/2 game of the Blue Jays for the No. 8 American League playoff seed. By the way, I digress, but the New York Yankees have now lost seven in a row. They are just a half-game better than Toronto and three...

John Means makes progress, but tough ending for O's
On a night that the Orioles lost another close game, lefty starter John Means took at least a small step forward. But Toronto beat the Orioles 5-4 in 10 innings as they fall to 0-4 against the Blue Jays and 14-17 for the season. O's killer Randal Grichuk blasted a two-run homer to center with two outs in the 10th off right-hander Cole Sulser. Sulser's cutter found too much of the plate and Grichuk did it again against the Orioles. Grichuk has 13 RBIs in five games versus the O's. So close to...

O's game blog: The series opener against Toronto
After losing two games against Tampa Bay and after last night's postponement, the Orioles tonight begin a four-game series in Buffalo against the Toronto Blue Jays (15-14). The Jays, who swept three from the Orioles earlier this season, hold third place in the American League East and are the current No. 8 seed for the AL playoffs. Toronto is 1 1/2 games ahead of the Orioles (14-16) as the series begins. The O's lost 4-2 and 4-3 in St. Petersburg, Fla., versus Tampa Bay. The Orioles began the...

Orioles discuss Jackie Robinson Day

Orioles discuss Jackie Robinson Day
Jackie Robinson Day is being formally commemorated today and tonight around Major League Baseball. There will be a focus on Robinson's activism and impact on civil rights in society during and following his playing career. Today's date of Aug. 28 is the anniversary of the March On Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, which Jackie and Rachel Robinson and their children attended. It is also the date in 1945 when Robinson and Branch Rickey met to discuss his future as a member of the...

On day with no game, the Orioles stood tall

On day with no game, the Orioles stood tall
After their first team meeting on Thursday afternoon, the Orioles decided to play last night against the Tampa Bay Rays. But upon heading out to batting practice and during BP, more conversations took place in smaller groups. The players then asked manager Brandon Hyde to hold a players-only meeting and they did. More thoughts and emotions were expressed. It appears some players that perhaps hadn't expressed much earlier were ready to do so then. Later we would learn the Orioles decided not to...

O's game blog: Series finale against Tampa (updated)
In a sense, we could call this the season of series sweeps for the Orioles. They have played nine series to completion and three times they swept their opponent and three times they got swept. Tonight they will try to avoid being part of a seventh sweep in 10 series on the year. They've lost two close games at Tropicana Field this week to Tampa Bay by 4-2 and 4-3 scores. The O's are 3-2 against the Rays this year and, yes, their earlier series in Baltimore resulted in an O's three-game...

O's had some ups and downs in the first half of the season
The Orioles reached the midpoint of this truncated 60-game season by going 14-16. So close to pulling out another win last night, one that would have left them at .500 at the 30-game point. They were certainly streaky in this span of games. They have had a six-game winning streak and a six-game losing streak. They swept three series, something they did not do once in 162 games last year, and they've been swept in three series. So six sweeps in the first nine series. And the Rays have won the...

O's game blog: Looking to get the offense going at the Trop
After a 4-2 loss in the series opener at Tropicana Field last night, the Orioles will play in St. Petersburg against Tampa Bay again this evening. It's the second of a three-game series and seven-game road trip. The Orioles are 8-2 on the road and began Tuesday night with the best road record in the majors. They also had won eight in a row on the road since losing opening night at Boston. So they went longer than 30 days between road losses. Even after that game, they still own MLB's best...
