A look at the latest loss, with notes on Cobb and the offense
Well, at least the Orioles didn't score three runs or less for the 17th time. They got four last night, but it wasn't nearly enough in an 8-4 loss to Tampa Bay. The Orioles have lost four in a row, 10 of 11 and 12 of their past 14 games. Their miserable start now has them 12 games under the .500 mark at 6-18. The Orioles got only five hits last night and the team average is just .169 (26-for-154) during what is so far a 1-4 homestand. They've scored 11 runs in five games on the homestand...

Alex Cobb falls to 0-3 as O's lose to Tampa Bay (quotes added)
For the first time as an Oriole, right-hander Alex Cobb made it through the fourth inning. But in his third start with his new team, he didn't make it through the fifth. Cobb was hit hard in the fifth when he allowed four runs as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Orioles 8-4 at Camden Yards. While the Rays have won five straight, the Orioles fall to 6-18 with their latest defeat. The Orioles have lost four in a row, 10 of 11 and 12 of their last 14 games. They are 3-8 at home and 4-7 versus American...

O's game blog: O's Alex Cobb faces his former Tampa Bay teammates
Orioles right-hander Alex Cobb (0-2, 15.43 ERA) makes his first start as an Oriole at home and he will do so against his former team. For the first time ever Cobb pitches against the Tampa Bay Rays as the clubs open a rain-shortened, two-game series. Cobb has failed to complete the fourth inning in his first two starts, which came at Boston and Detroit. He went a combined seven innings allowing 20 hits and 15 runs (12 earned). He has allowed a .500 batting average (20-for-40) in those...

Jace Peterson on his "wild ride" that led him to the Orioles
As he joins his fourth major league team today, Jace Peterson will hit the ground running for the Orioles. He's going right into the starting lineup tonight, batting ninth at second base. Since opening day he has been called up by the New York Yankees, designated for assignment by New York, re-signed by the Yankees, DFA'd again and claimed on waivers by the Orioles. All that happened in a 16-day span. "Definitely been a wild ride," Peterson said this afternoon in the Orioles clubhouse....

Can the rotation lead an O's turnaround? (Plus farm notes)

Can the rotation lead an O's turnaround? (Plus farm notes)
If there was ever a good time for a rainout, maybe last night was it for the Orioles. They were scheduled to begin a three-game series with Tampa Bay but got washed out at Camden Yards. The Orioles are trying to reverse a 6-17 start that has seen them lose nine of 10 and 11 of their past 13 games. They are just 3-7 at home, where they've scored only 19 runs in 10 games. Maybe a day away will be beneficial. With a 2-1 loss to Cleveland Monday night, the Orioles ended a stretch in which they...

O's offense comes up short again and Cobb faces his former team
It is beginning to look like Groundhog Day. The Orioles show up at Camden Yards, get a decent starting pitching performance many nights, but can't back it up with enough offense to win. Any offense would be appreciated at this point. The Cleveland Indians have an excellent pitching staff and the Orioles offense can vouch for that after scoring just seven runs on 21 hits the last four days. Thanks to Dylan Bundy they were not swept four straight. Right-hander Kevin Gausman allowed two runs over...

Chris Davis on the offense, Kevin Gausman on his outing
The Orioles tonight ended a season-opening stretch where they played all five American League playoff teams from last season. To say the least, they didn't handle it well. Tonight's 2-1 loss to Cleveland was the latest flat game for the offense. The Orioles have lost nine of 10 of 11 of 13 to begin the year at 6-17. They scored just seven runs on 21 hits in losing three of four to Cleveland. They have scored three runs or fewer 16 times in 23 games. I asked first baseman Chris Davis if it is...

One-run short: O's fall 2-1 as Cleveland takes three of four
Kevin Gausman pitched a very strong game. But so did Carlos Carrasco as the Orioles bats fell mostly silent again tonight. Cleveland beat the Orioles 2-1 at to take the last three games and three of four in this series. The loss was the Orioles ninth in 10 games and 11th in 13 contests as they fall to 6-17. Cleveland is 12-8 and has won nine of its past 12 games. Gausman began tonight with a 13.50 ERA and batting average against of .429 in the first inning of his starts this year, and then he...

O's game blog: Kevin Gausman faces Cleveland
With eight losses in the last nine games, and 10 in the past 12, the Orioles will try to split their four-game series with Cleveland tonight. The Birds won Friday, but lost the last two days to the Tribe by 4-0 and 7-3 scores. The Orioles offense continues to scuffle and is producing just 3.3 runs per game after last year's team averaged 4.6 per game to rank eighth in the American League. The Orioles' current team slash line is .215/.284/.359 and they rank 15th and last in the league in each...

Manny Machado on his co-AL Player of the Week award

Manny Machado on his co-AL Player of the Week award
For the fourth time in his career, the Orioles' Manny Machado is the winner of the American League Player of the Week award. This time he shares the honor with A's pitcher Sean Manaea after he no-hit Boston on Saturday night. Machado posted a slash line of .500/.560/1.273 (11-for-22) with seven runs scored, 11 hits, two doubles, five home runs and eight RBIs over six games through Sunday. It is his first POTW honor since last August. "It is always an honor to receive this award for all the...

O's Dan Duquette comments on the offense and more during Sunday radio interview
When I interviewed Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette on the radio on Sunday, he pointed out that many factors have contributed to the Orioles' dismal 6-16 start. But he seemed to focus more on the strikeout total on offense and the misplays on defense. Duquette was my guest on "Orioles Baseball Tonight" on flagship station 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore. I asked him if a team that has lost 10 of 12 and is already 10 games under .500 has dug too big a hole to...

Manny Machado and Andrew Cashner after O's loss to Cleveland

Manny Machado and Andrew Cashner after O's loss to Cleveland
Individual performances are nice, like Chance Sisco throwing out three runners in a game or Manny Machado hitting two homers. Again. Yet they seem to keep happening in Orioles losses. Machado hit solo homers off two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber in the first and fourth innings today, yet his team lost again.m Cleveland beat the Orioles 7-3 at Camden Yards, dropping the Orioles record to 3-6 at home and to 6-16 for the season. They've lost eight of nine and 10 of 12 games. "There is no...

Manny Machado homers twice, but O's fall to Cleveland 7-3
The Orioles got some early offense going against two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber, who had allowed just one run in his last two starts combined. But it would not be enough today. Orioles right-hander Andrew Cashner allowed eight hits and four runs over six innings - the exact numbers as Chris Tillman Saturday - as Cleveland beat the Orioles 7-3 in front of 27,394 at Camden Yards. With their 10th loss in 12 games, the Orioles fall to 6-16 for the season. They are 3-6 at home, scoring 18...

O's game blog: It's Cashner against Kluber at Camden Yards
With a team batting average of just .216 for the season and a club that is scoring just 3.3 runs per game, today the Orioles face a two-time Cy Young Award winner. Right-hander Corey Kluber, the AL Cy Young winner in 2014 and 2017, will face the Orioles this afternoon at Camden Yards. Baltimore beat Cleveland 3-1 Friday night behind Dylan Bundy but was shutout 4-0 yesterday and held to two hits in a complete-game outing by Mike Clevinger. In becoming the 19th multiple winner of the Cy Young,...

Taking stock of the struggling offense and Tanner Scott's outing
The Cleveland Indians pitching staff has been on a roll. The Orioles hitting has definitely not. That has been a bad combination in this series for the Orioles. Thanks to Dylan Bundy, they managed to win on Friday night, but they are batting .138 (8-for-58) the past two nights against Cleveland pitchers. The Orioles have scored a total of 15 runs in eight home games in 2018. They've scored three, two, zero, one, one, five, three and zero. They are batting .169/.263/.274 at home this year. They...

Tillman on his outing, Sisco on three caught stealing
After pitching to an ERA of 11.91 with a WHIP of 2.824 through three starts, right-hander Chris Tillman needed to pitch better in a hurry. He did today but the Orioles were blanked on two hits by Cleveland's Mike Clevinger in a 4-0 loss that drops them to 6-15. They've lost nine of 11 and have been held to three runs or fewer 14 times in 21 games. Tillman gave up three solo homers in pitching a season-high six innings. He allowed eight hits and four runs with a walk and five strikeouts on 83...

Cleveland blanks the Orioles 4-0 behind Mike Clevinger
Granted the bar had not been set very high, but Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman had his best start of the year this afternoon. But Cleveland right-hander Mike Clevinger pitched better. Clevinger pitched a complete-game two-hitter, as the Tribe beat the Orioles 4-0. He walked two and fanned three to improve to 2-0 with an ERA of 1.75. Clevinger threw 107 pitches, 70 or strikes. The Orioles fall to 6-15 for the season, have lost seven of eight and nine of their past 11 games. Cleveland is...

O's game blog: Chris Tillman faces Cleveland at Camden Yards
The Orioles have won back-to-back games just once this season. They beat the Yankees on April 5-6 at Yankee Stadium. A win today over Cleveland and they would double that total. The Orioles (6-14) host Cleveland (9-8) at Camden Yards in Game 2 of a four-game series and 10-game homestand. Baltimore won 3-1 last night behind right-hander Dylan Bundy. Today, Chris Tillman is set to make his fourth start. The right-hander has faced three teams that made the playoffs last season in his first three...

Left-hander Tanner Scott on rejoining the Orioles

Left-hander Tanner Scott on rejoining the Orioles
We often hear Orioles manager Buck Showalter say that for a pitcher sometimes less is more. He is usually referencing velocity with that comment. That seems to be the case right now for left-hander Tanner Scott, who was recalled to the big leagues for the second time this season yesterday. Scott has a fastball that can touch 100 mph and did last year in the big leagues, when he got into two games in September. He made his big league debut Sept. 20 vs. Boston and his first two major league...

Notes on ending two losing streaks, Bundy's slider and more
So the Orioles got a much-needed win over a good team with Friday's 3-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians. They ended an 11-game losing streak. Yes, I know they had lost their previous six games. But they had also lost their previous 11 games when scoring three runs or fewer. The Orioles were 1-11 on the year in such games. The only previous win was opening day, 3-2 over Minnesota. It had to be nice for the team and its fans to get a win and at least a small glimmer of hope that they might...
