A look at the Orioles' addition of Dexter Fowler

As one deal potentially may be falling apart, another came together. Tonight, for what look to be the same terms offered to free agent pitcher Yovani Gallardo, the Orioles added free agent outfielder Dexter Fowler.

They've agreed to terms with Fowler on a three-year deal worth $35 million, according to reports first from MASNsports.com's Roch Kubatko and then from ESPN.

Last year for the Chicago Cubs, Fowler hit .250/.346/.411 with 29 doubles, eight triples, 17 homers (a career high), 46 RBIs, 20 steals and 102 runs. His OPS was .757.

His career slash line is .267/.363/.418 with an OPS of .781. Fowler should move right in at right field and bat leadoff. He will add much needed on-base capabilities to a lineup that ranked 12th in the league in OBP last year at .307.

Dexter-Fowler-Cubs.jpgFowler, who turns 30 on March 22, has spent seven of his eight major league seasons in the National League. With Houston in 2014, he hit .276/.375/.399 with eight homers, 35 RBIs, 11 steals and 61 runs scored in 116 games.

A switch-hitter, Fowler hit much better in 2015 versus left-handed pitching but his splits are a little more balanced over his career. Last season, he hit .326 with an .825 OPS versus lefties and .228/.726 against right-handers.

For his career, Fowler is a .303 batter with an OPS of .829 against left-handed pitchers and is a .252 hitter with an OPS of .761 against right-handers.

Is this one possible lineup look with Fowler?

RF Dexter Fowler
LF Hyun Soo Kim
3B Manny Machado
1B Chris Davis
CF Adam Jones
DH Mark Trumbo
C Matt Wieters
SS J.J. Hardy
2B Jonathan Schoop

If Kim looks like he can handle major league pitching, this lineup puts two high-OBP guys atop the lineup before the big thumpers. If he is not ready to bat second, Kim could be dropped to ninth and everyone moves up one spot. That puts Machado second and not third.

The Orioles will give up the No. 14 draft pick to sign Fowler, unless the Gallardo deal comes back together and is finalized first. If that happens, Fowler would cost the Orioles the No. 28 pick that was compensation for losing Wei-Yin Chen. Now we wait to find out if Fowler's addition comes in addition to Gallardo or instead of the right-hander. Either way, the Orioles lineup just got better. Once Fowler passes a physical, of course.
