Nationals acquire right-hander David Carpenter
The Washington Nationals acquired right-handed pitcher David Carpenter from the New York Yankees on Thursday in exchange for minor league infielder Tony Renda. Additionally, outfielder Nate McLouth was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements. Carpenter, 29, joins the Nationals in his fifth Major League season, coming to Washington after stops with Houston, Toronto, Atlanta and the New York Yankees....

David Huzzard: Pondering Bryce Harper's future

David Huzzard: Pondering Bryce Harper's future
With the Nationals playing the New York Yankees, one of the big storylines was Bryce Harper playing his first games in new Yankees Stadium. This is a story because Harper grew up a Yankees fan, his favorite player is Mickey Mantle and he even wears No. 34 because three plus four equals seven, Mickey Mantle's number. These facts lead to an assumption that when Harper becomes a free agent after the 2018 season that he is destined to become a Yankee. This assumption ignores many factors that are...

Danny Espinosa fighting for playing time anywhere on the field

Danny Espinosa fighting for playing time anywhere on the field
Nationals manager Matt Williams told reporters after yesterday's 5-4 win that he had to figure a way to keep Danny Espinosa's bat in the lineup. His saying that is understandable after the six-year veteran went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, a RBI and two runs scored. His eight home runs are secon- best on the Nationals as is his .842 OPS. But Espinosa is seemingly the odd man out of the Nats infield with Anthony Rendon's return. Williams could experiment with Espinosa in left field. The...

Zach Wilt: What's made Zach Britton so good this season?
After an All-Star-caliber performance in which he recorded a league-high 51 saves 2012, Jim Johnson scuffled the next season. The Orioles closer still managed 50 saves, but blew nine along the way and the Birds finished 6 1/2 games out of the wild card. Johnson allowed two more hits per nine innings in 2013, as a result recording a 9.75 ERA over 12 innings in May of that season. Johnson's success in the ninth inning was predicated on the success of his sinker. Unlike most closers, he relied on...

Michael A. Taylor, Denard Span clutch in Nats' 5-4 comeback win

Michael A. Taylor, Denard Span clutch in Nats' 5-4 comeback win
The young and the old helped the Nationals to a much needed 5-4 win in 11 innings over the Yankees this afternoon. After the Nats' lead disappeared in the seventh, rookie Michael A. Taylor answered with a clutch two-run game-tying homer in the eighth. A stout performance from the Nats bullpen extended the game into the 11th inning, where 31-year-old Denard Span legged out an infield single, allowing Tyler Moore to safely hurry to the plate for the eventual game-winning run. "We battled today,...

Span's gritty day helps Nats to 5-4 win in 11 innings
The Nationals finally displayed some clutch hitting in the third inning today. With two outs, Danny Espinosa sliced a double down the left field line off Yankees right-hander Nathan Eovaldi. Denard Span immediately followed with his own double, slapped just inside the bag at third, scoring Espinosa for the game's first run. Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez has surrendered one hit and walk with three strikeouts through three innings. Update: Espinosa did more two-out damage in the fifth. Eovaldi...

Span in, Zimmerman out in Bronx finale (with lineups)
The Nationals will get their second look at Yankees right-hander Nathan Eovaldi this season. Ian Desmond and Bryce Harper both tagged Eovaldi for solo homers on May 19 as the Nats scored five runs in his 4 1/3 innings. Harper bombed his 20th homer of the year in last night's loss. The blast came in the 58th game, making Harper the fastest player to reach the 20-homer mark in Nationals history (2005-present). Harper trails only Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton for the major league lead in home...

Rachel Levitin: Pinpointing the Nationals' problem

Rachel Levitin: Pinpointing the Nationals' problem
The Nationals are 58 games into this season, and it's not the Marlins, Mets, Cubs or even the Yankees who remain their toughest foe. As it turns out, they may be their own worst enemy. Though the Nationals have managed to find a groove and settle into first place in the National League East so far this season, they've dropped a game behind the Mets to second place in the division with their 6-1 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday night. It's June 10 and the All-Star break is nearly a month away....

Another quiet night from Nats offense leads to a third straight loss

Another quiet night from Nats offense leads to a third straight loss
The Nationals managed to put only a solo homer from Bryce Harper on the scoreboard tonight as they fell 6-1 to the Yankees. Runs figured to be hard to come with right-handers Max Scherzer and Masahiro Tanaka showcased in the night's premier pitching duel, and they were until the bottom of seventh inning. With the game knotted at 1-1, Scherzer came out to start the frame having already thrown 100 pitches. He gave up consecutive singles to Yankees left fielder Ramon Flores and center fielder...

Domenic Vadala: Getting a grip on a slippery situation

Domenic Vadala: Getting a grip on a slippery situation
A few weeks ago, Brian Matusz and the Orioles became part of a league-wide discussion about foreign substances used by pitchers on the baseball. That kind of started up again late last week when it was announced that Matusz's eight-game suspension was being upheld (never mind the fact that Milwaukee's Will Smith had his shortened to six games for the same offense). I come at this from various angels. First off, I'm not a fan of opposing managers asking umpires to check guys. At a time when...

Scherzer takes the loss as Nats fall 6-1
In a game featuring top-flight starting pitching, a couple of solo homers are the only runs on the scoreboard. Nationals starter Max Scherzer flinched first. Leading off the third inning, Yankees second baseman Stephen Drew belted a fastball over the right field fence. Scherzer missed on the heater, leaving it on the inner half of the plate and Drew made him pay with his eighth longball of the season. Bryce Harper answered for the Nats in the fourth. Facing a 1-0 count with two outs, Harper...

Scherzer, Tanaka headline marquee pitching matchup (Span late scratch)

Scherzer, Tanaka headline marquee pitching matchup (Span late scratch)
Denard Span is set to lead off and play center field for the Nationals tonight, two days after he was forced to leave Sunday's loss due to back spasms. Like many in the Nats lineup, Span has also been slumping lately. He is just 3-for-24 (.125) over his last six games. Yunel Escobar is the designated hitter for the interleague game at Yankee Stadium. That allows Anthony Rendon to start at third base and Danny Espinosa to play second. Over his last four games, Espinosa is 4-for-8 (.500) with...

Best of the decade: 10-game winning streaks in 2005, 2014
As the Nationals celebrate 10 seasons in Washington, D.C., we reflect on some of the best moments since the franchise moved to the nation's capital. Each Wednesday for the next 10 weeks, check out Nationals Pastime for a remembrance of one of the watershed moments in Nationals history. Not much was expected of the Nationals in their inaugural season of 2005. Hall of Famer Frank Robinson managed a selection of random big leaguers led by the likes of first baseman Nick Johnson, third baseman...

Nationals draft Vanderbilt's Rhett Wiseman and Iona's Mariano Rivera Jr.
The Nationals have a theme going in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft. They dipped into the talent-rich SEC pool to select junior Rhett Wiseman from Vanderbilt University in the third round (No. 103 overall). Wiseman becomes the third outfielder the Nats have drafted this year following LSU's Andrew Stevenson and Arizona prep star Blake Perkins from Verrado High School. Wiseman, 20, is slashing .316/.418/.567 this season for the Commodores, who are still alive in the College World Series....

Rizzo on Stevenson: "This guy plays 100 mph with his hair on fire"
Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo opted for a couple dynamic outfielders with the team's 58th and 69th picks in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft. Louisiana State University's Andrew Stevenson was Rizzo's first selection this year followed by Blake Perkins, a prep prospect out of Verrado High School in Arizona. "We're adding to our already fertile stable of athletes," Rizzo said. "You know our motto here ... we go pitching, defense, athleticism. And certainly both of these guys fill...

Matt of Matt's Bats: Handicapping the Nationals' Triple Crown contestants
If you're like me, you were glued to the TV on Saturday evening, watching the Belmont Stakes to see American Pharoah win the Triple Crown. In horse racing, the Triple Crown means that a horse wins the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes in the same year. American Pharoah was the first Triple Crown winner since a horse named Affirmed did it in 1978. American Pharoah's win on Saturday ended a 37-year drought for thoroughbred racing's biggest prize. (It was also more fun to...
