It's been an abysmal start to the 2018 season for the Orioles, and that could even be a massive understatement. In a year that seemed so crucial at the start with so many key cogs in the organization potentially moving on in the near future, the Birds have yet to take flight. It's something that has led many to look ahead, giving up hope of a postseason berth in 2018 before Memorial Day even hits.
With organizational uncertainty, the Orioles have done few things to set themselves up for some...
Buck Showalter's comments on Felipe Alou are on the back cover of "Alou: My Baseball Journey." When the Orioles skipper received an advance copy, he was kind enough to let me read it. I'm glad he did.
This is an important book. This is a Jackie Robinson story from a different place in a different time.
The baseball stories are here. Three Alou brothers playing in the same outfield in a major league game; Felipe Alou's assessments of the best players he saw at the different positions; his...
On Wednesday evening, the weary Nationals bullpen suffered a collapse and got smoked like a Willie Nelson cigarette, to the tune of nine runs in the eighth inning. The dagger came when A.J Cole, now pitching in relief after losing the fifth starter role to Jeremy Hellickson, served up a mammoth grand slam home run to Yoenis Céspedes. This elevated Cole's ERA this season to 13.06 and left many Nationals fans, myself included, wondering what the next step is for Cole's career in...
The Orioles are in a rut and are watching the losses pile up as they slide down the standings in the American League East. You can only keep telling yourself, "It's early," for so long. Here on April 20, it is still true, but the hole keeps getting deeper and deeper and digging out of it only gets more difficult as time goes on. There have been some gut-wrenching losses, like Wednesday's 6-5 defeat in Detroit, and other times the Orioles just have been outplayed by their opponents, like...

When it comes to pitching prospects, both before they are even drafted and after, all of the talk tends to be about how hard they throw their fastball. While I won't argue that it's nice when a guy can throw a mid-to-upper 90s fastball, I'll take a guy who gets outs, pounds the zone and makes a hitter earn his way on base. Orioles prospect Alex Wells, a left-hander, falls into that latter category, and I'm glad he's in the O's system.
Wells, 21, is one of the rare International free agent...
It's not that the Nationals have been burdened with major injuries. But they have been plagued by a couple of nagging minor injuries at once. Daniel Murphy, the big injury, is still recovering from offseason surgery. Adam Eaton, after coming back from a grisly ACL tear, tweaked his ankle and is on the disabled list. Anthony Rendon fouled a ball off his toe and has sat the last few games. Brian Goodwin just went on the DL for a wrist injury. None of these three injuries will likely keep players...
The Washington Nationals recalled outfielder Andrew Stevenson from Triple-A Syracuse and placed outfielder Brian Goodwin on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to April 16) with a left wrist contusion on Tuesday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
Stevenson, 23, gets the call for his first Major League assignment of the season. He joins the Nationals after a strong Spring Training where he hit .274 with four doubles, two homers,...
Following a week in which he went 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA (2 ER/16.0 IP) and 21 strikeouts against just one walk, Nationals right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer was named the National League Player of the Week on Monday. Major League Baseball made the announcement on MLB Network.
Scherzer, 33, tossed his ninth career complete game (fifth career shutout) in Monday's 2-0 win over Atlanta. He capped his evening with a strikeout of Ender Inciarte, giving him 10 strikeouts for the second time this season...
The Orioles and Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA) today announced that after a multi-year effort of research and enhancements, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded Oriole Park at Camden Yards with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for an existing building. Oriole Park joins AT&T Park in San Francisco, Calif., Marlins Park in Miami, Fla., and Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn., as LEED Gold certified ballparks in Major League...
It was great to be at the Nationals Park on Jackie Robinson Day. Even if the crowd was sparse in the cool, wet weather, it was heartwarming to see all of the players wearing No. 42 in honor of the man who broke baseball's color barrier.
Reflecting on the legacy of Robinson and those who followed him, it's appropriate to look back at the Washington's history of civil rights and baseball as examples of how far sport and society have come, and to see how far we still have to go.
Washington was...
There's been lots of chatter in the last few days and weeks about the status of Orioles manager Buck Showalter. As everyone knows, Showalter is in the final year of his contract. He, executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette and a number of prominent players are all facing a walk year. But the Las Vegas sportsbook Bovada last week released its latest odds on the first major league manager to be fired, and Showalter topped the list at 3/2. He's leaped ahead of the likes of...

In a rather quiet spring training for the Nationals, one of the biggest storylines for the team in West Palm Beach was the unique decision by Ryan Zimmerman to play only in one spring training game. Zimmerman instead preferred to get his work accomplished on the back fields, in games consisting of predominantly minor leaguers. Certainly, the fans that traveled to watch the team were disappointed to miss seeing the face of the franchise, but also were questioning the wisdom of this...

After enjoying a much-needed off-day, their first since March 30, the Orioles are headed north to square off against the first-place Red Sox for a four-game weekend series that includes the annual 11 a.m. Patriot's Day game on Monday. It feels like the Orioles always play that game. The Birds took just one of three in their quick home series against the Blue Jays. Baltimore's offense scored only two runs in the first two games of that series before finally breaking out in the finale with five...
"The American Spirit" is the latest in David McCullough's writings on the lineage of American history. There are few authors I run to the bookstore for to acquire their latest work, but he is one of them.
The book contains 15 speeches of McCullough given before Congress, at the White House and to college graduates.
Each contains historical matter relevant to the location of the speech, beautifully intertwined to a larger historical theme - America's history - for which this author has a...

There were question marks in the air during spring training over who the Nationals' backup catcher would be. The team answered that question by sending Pedro Severino to Triple-A and choosing Miguel Montero to back up Matt Wieters on opening day.
However, the Nationals caught the injury bug, Wieters went on the DL, and Severino was quickly recalled. Not only that, but Montero eventually went on paternity leave, and throughout that time, Severino was the primary starter. And, boy, has he...
