The non-waiver trade deadline traditionally marks the beginning of the home stretch for baseball season, which makes now a great time to indulge in the fun of making a few Orioles predictions. Of course, the usual disclaimers apply: I wouldn't bet on me being right so you shouldn't, either.
With that, here we go:
* Chris Davis will break the 50-home run mark, but not 60
As amazing a first half as that was we all knew he wasn't going to keep up the pace. The good news is he's already had...
A team doesn't end up in the position of the Nationals without more than one problem, and while most of the focus has been on an offense that has scored the second-fewest runs in the National League, there are other problems. For the month of July, the Nats offense was what most expected it to be: an offense full of streaky hitters that scored the sixth-most runs in the NL, scoring five or more runs nine times and two or fewer 12.
The Nationals have been prone to these strange...
Remember Buck Showalter and Jim Johnson's MLB Fan Cave prank last year in which they convinced Darren O'Day that he shouldn't be riding his Solowheel around Yankee Stadium?
O'Day does.
In his live chat today, O'Day recounted the prank, saying that Showalter "is very believable."
Watch his reaction to the prank below.
Also, check out the original MLB Fan Cave video of O'Day getting pranked by Showalter. It's hilarious every time.

Jon Lester and the Red Sox shut out the Orioles in the finale of the three-game series in Baltimore, highlighting one of the O's few offensive weaknesses - their numbers against left-handed pitching. The Birds were held to four hits against Lester, walked just twice and struck out eight times. They were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and grounded into three double plays.
Forty-one of the Orioles' 58 wins have come against right-handed pitching, and they have gone 17-15 this season...
The weather has been remarkably cool and crisp for late July, as if a hand reached out and parted the humid air to allow fans a better ending to the last homestand of July. On Sunday, before the team went to Detroit, there were little kids running the bases. Surprisingly, there were Nationals running them as well, and with almost as much joy and abandon.
It was a perfect day in D.C., almost too perfect, like one of those television shows that paints a Washington political scene so much more...
The good news: The Nationals have won four of their last five games. The bad news? They trail the Braves by 8 1/2 games heading into play this week. Some more good news: The Nats still have nine games head-to-head with Atlanta before the end of the season. By getting the deficit back under that nine games, the Nats still kind of control their destiny.
It's a tough road, but it looks better than before the series with the Mets over the weekend, which started with the Mets clobbering the Nats...
This Tuesday, we will be hosting another monthly video chat, which airs live on MASNsports.com. However, this month's will be a special doubleheader, in which both Adam Jones and Darren O'Day will be answering your questions.
In order for this event to be successful, we need your help. Submit your questions on Twitter with the hashtags #AskAJ and #AskDarren or leave them in the comment section below.
Maybe you're wondering which team Jones thinks is the O's toughest foe. Curious about...
In looking back through franchise history, I have no doubt that the Erik Bedard-for-Adam Jones trade will be looked at as the turning point in this era. However, I think we often forget that there were other players involved in that trade, namely Chris Tillman. Of course, at the time of the trade, Tillman was only a prospect, and he was immediately inserted into the Orioles' minor league system. I attended his major league debut in July 2009, and I can't say that I wasn't impressed.
If you...
The Orioles today announced that they have recalled outfielder LJ Hoes from Triple-A Norfolk. To make room for Hoes on the roster, right-hander Jairo Asencio has been designated for assignment.
Hoes, 23, was batting .304/.406/.403 in 99 games for the Tides. He ranks among International League leaders in on-base percentage (3rd), hits (5th, 111) and runs (T-3rd, 62). The 2012 Orioles Minor League Player of the Year appeared in two games for the Birds last season.
Asencio, 30, appeared in...
Following today's doubleheader, the Washington Nationals optioned right-handed pitcher Drew Storen to Syracuse of the Triple-A International League. Nationals Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
Storen, 25, went 3-2 with two saves, 14 holds and a 5.95 ERA in 47 games this season with Washington.
When an Oriole has a shaving cream pie smashed in his face after a game, he knows he had a great game.
Usually, in his postgame interview, the star of the game is greeted by Adam Jones' shaving cream pie delivery to the face.
Well, tonight the tables turned. After turning in two home runs and three RBIs in his 2-for-4 night at the dish, Jones got a taste of his own medicine with two pies to the face.
However, these were not normal deliveries; first base coach Wayne Kirby pied Jones, and...
The first-place Red Sox are coming to town this weekend, but I have the Tampa Bay Rays on my find. I've feared that the Rays are the biggest threat to win the American League East ever since David Price returned to form. Price came off the disabled list in early July and the Rays are 15-3 since his return. Overall, the Rays pitching staff has five complete games in July, which MLB.com tells us is the most in the month since the Mets had five in August 2010.
As I sat at my computer Thursday...
Mike Rizzo has referred to Stephen Strasburg in the past as his "silent assassin," a soft-spoken, but ultra-competitive, elite athlete. The No.1 overall pick in the 2009 draft had his moments. He snapped at a reporter once who asked why he struggled against the Marlins after a tough start against the Fish and reminded everyone that he'd historically done well against Miami. Back in 2010, he told a loud-mouthed fan who made the mistake of taunting Strasburg while the Nationals were ahead on...
There's little doubt to any Orioles fan about who the leader of the team is. Since Adam Jones arrived in Baltimore prior to the 2008 season, fans have slowly fallen in love with the outspoken center fielder. When Andy MacPhail pulled off the trade to acquire Jones from the Seattle Mariners, I'd guess that few predicted the impact that he could have on the organization. That impact is growing deeper each day, and it's something that could put him in a class few have joined.
Jones went...
Every weekend from April through the end of July, I play softball in a co-ed league in Glover Park, and every weekend between those months, the Nationals comes up in conversation. It's the usual fare of "Were you at that game?" or "Did you see that play?" But last weekend, my first base coach shared a thought with me that I hadn't considered yet this season: The Nationals aren't getting angry enough about the fact that they're on a legitimate skid right now.
After wasting yet another...
The Orioles today announced that they have signed 24-year old Cuban outfielder Dariel Alvarez to a minor league contract. Alvarez will be assigned to Class-A Frederick after reporting to Sarasota this week.
Alvarez played for Camaguey in the Cuban League from 2007-11 and Tuxpan in Mexico in 2012. In five seasons with Camaguey, he batted .297 (341-1147) with 37 home runs and 180 RBIs. In 2011, Alvarez set career highs, batting .363/.404/.613 (125-344) with 20 home runs, 81 RBIs, 22 doubles and...
The Orioles today announced that right-hander Francisco Rodriguez has reported to the club and they have optioned infielder Danny Valencia to Triple-A Norfolk.
Rodriguez was acquired from Milwaukee last night. He will wear uniform #57.
Valencia is batting .200/.243/.443 (14-for-70) in 24 games for the Orioles this season.
With the Nats having not won a game after the All-Star break and in the midst of a 2-10 stretch, there are many looking at the Nationals as sellers. The only problem is the Nats don't have a lot to sell, and that isn't because they don't have talent. Any contending team would love to have Jordan Zimmermann, Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon, Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez or Ian Desmond. The only issue is that they are integral to the Nats' success going forward. The core pieces of the roster...
The Orioles today announced that they have acquired right-hander Francisco Rodriguez from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor league infielder Nick Delmonico.
Rodriguez, 31, is 1-1 with 10 saves, a 1.09 ERA (24.2IP, 3ER), 26 strikeouts and nine walks in 25 appearances for Milwaukee this season. He has recorded double-digit saves in nine of the last 10 seasons, including a major league record 62 in 2008 with the Los Angeles Angels. His 304 career saves are third most among active...
The Orioles, along with the Orioles Wives, Oriole Advocates, WJZ-TV and MASN personalities, Von Paris Moving and Storage and the Maryland Food Bank, will hold their 27th annual Food and Funds Drive at Oriole Park at Camden Yards this weekend, July 26-28, during the series against the Boston Red Sox. Members of these groups will collect non-perishable food items and monetary donations from fans at each ballpark entrance from the time gates open until the middle of the 2nd inning during games...
