There were a few things that were said last week that kind of bugged me. Chris Davis hit home runs last Sunday against Boston, and then again Monday and Wednesday (twice) at Detroit, and in Toronto on Friday. He currently leads the majors with 27 homers. But many fans, and even some people who follow the Orioles, don't want to let a certain matter rest. Whenever a big league slugger breaks out, the PED argument always seems to come up. On June 16, someone tweeted, "I would love to see Chris...
Ever wondered what Adam Jones considers to be the breakfast of champions? Curious about the center fielder's pregame rituals? Or what his favorite off-day activity is? Well, wonder no more!
Each month during the season, MASNsports.com holds a live chat with the Orioles' center fielder. But these chats, which stream on MASNsports.com, can't happen without you, the fan.
Leading up to the chat, we ask you for your questions - baseball-related or not - for Jones. If you have a question for...
The Orioles today announced that they have reinstated right-hander Miguel Gonzalez from the paternity leave list and placed outfielder Steve Pearce on the disabled list, retroactive to June 20, with left wrist tendinitis.
Gonzalez, 29, is 5-2 with a 3.75 ERA (74.1IP, 31ER) in 12 starts this season. His wife Lucia had their first child, daughter Leah, on Monday.
Pearce, 30, batted .235/.311/.383 with three home runs and nine RBI in 28 games for the Orioles this season.
One of the nice things about great individual performances are that they bring attention to past player accomplishments. Such is the case with Manny Machado and Brian Roberts.
Machado hit his major league-leading 33rd double of the season this week, which tied Roberts' Orioles record for most doubles prior to an All-Star Game. Machado is likely to break that 2008 mark as soon as this weekend and has Roberts' single-season franchise record for doubles in his sights.
After setting an Orioles...
Mike Rizzo reluctantly parted with 2010 fourth-round pick A.J. Cole in the December 2011 trade with the Oakland A's that brought Gio Gonzalez to the nation's capital in return for Cole, left-hander Tom Milone, right-hander Brad Peacock and catcher Derek Norris.
Given a chance to reacquire Cole a year later when the Athletics got involved in three-team talks with the Nationals and Seattle Mariners, Rizzo pulled the trigger on a deal that brought the 21-year-old Cole back to the organization...
Everyone has been talking about Superman since "Man of Steel" has been rocking the box offices the past week. It led us to consider: Who is the Nationals' "Man of Steel"?
Is it Ian Desmond, who has hit two home runs in the past two games? Is it Jordan Zimmermann, who is tied for the major league lead with 10 wins? Perhaps it's one of the Nats' younger talents, Stephen Strasburg or Bryce Harper.
With a well-balanced lineup, it's difficult to choose just one "Man of Steel". But, with...
The Baltimore Orioles have been on quite a run this week, taking two of three from the Detroit Tigers and before that, taking three of four from the rival Boston Red Sox.
In the offseason, a lot of experts doubted that the Orioles could repeat what they did in 2012 this season. So far, they have proven the naysayers wrong.
As of this morning, 73 games into the 2013 season, the Orioles are 11 games over .500 and their record stands at 42-31. Baltimore trails Boston in the American League East...
"You've got to show up tomorrow ready to eat somebody's face."
Three straight losses and a frustrating start to the season led Jayson Werth to speak with this intensity, and everyone took notice.
Immediately after the words left Werth's mouth, the term "eat face" had taken on a life of its own within the Nationals.
Well, apparently I'll be #EatingFace today.— Ian Desmond (@IanDesmond20) June 19, 2013
Eat face! #zombieMode— Bryce Harper (@Bharper3407) June 19,...
In the early days of his career with the Nationals, shortstop Ian Desmond racked up more errors than web gems. Presently, he's solidifying himself as a leader in the Nats clubhouse. It's a role that seems to suit him now that he's growing into himself as a player and maturing as an adult.
With the heart of the Washington batting order not doing its job on a consistent basis and the Nats struggling to find a stream of positive momentum, Desmond is leading this team. Fresh off an 11th-inning...
With just over two weeks of voting left, the Orioles are continuing their push to be well-represented at Major League Baseball's All-Star Game in New York this July by hosting four Vote Orange rallies over the next week. The Vote Orange Street team will visit restaurants and taverns in Federal Hill this Friday, June 21, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and will then canvass Canton Square restaurants and taverns on Sunday, June 23 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Orioles outfielder Nate McLouth will appear at Modell's...
The Washington Nationals today returned from rehab and reinstated second baseman Danny Espinosa from the 15-Day Disabled List. The Nationals then optioned Espinosa to Syracuse of the Triple-A International League. Nationals Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
Espinosa, who played in six games for the Chiefs during his just-completed rehab assignment, is a career .230 hitter (329-for-1428) with 79 doubles, eight triples, 47...
Of all of the positive developments we've witnessed in Birdland over the past 18 months or so, the best one (outside of the playoffs) might be this year's All-Star voting results.
As of Monday, four Orioles - Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Chris Davis, and J.J. Hardy - were in position to start the All-Star Game. Not just make the team. Start. One more player - Manny Machado - is a near lock to be selected even if he isn't voted a starter (he's currently second behind Miguel Cabrera at third...
Of the Nationals' current healthy lineup, only Ian Desmond is performing above his career average OPS of .744 at .791, and Ryan Zimmerman is the only Nat with an OPS over .800 at .808. Everyone else is either on the disabled list or underperforming their career averages, some to a comical degree.
One of the largest problems with the Nationals is that their best player is currently on the DL and with no timetable for the return of Bryce Harper, the rapid descent into the depth of the NL...
With the All-Star break just a little less than a month away, we're encouraging fans to vote so that D.C. is well-represented at Citi Field on July 16.
One way that we're doing so is through one of our new favorite social media sites, Vine. Be sure to give @masnNationals a follow, as we being to upload behind-the-scenes looks of Nats Park, MASN contests and more!
And while you're at it, be sure to vote Nats. Voting ends July 4.
The Orioles today announced that they have recalled left-hander Zach Britton from Triple-A Norfolk, who is scheduled to start tonight at Detroit, and selected the contract of infielder Travis Ishikawa from the Tides. To make room for Ishikawa on the 25 and 40-man rosters, right-hander Miguel Gonzalez was placed on the Paternity Leave List and infielder Yamaico Navarro has been designated for assignment.
Britton, 25, is 3-2 with a 3.28 ERA (60.1IP, 22ER) in 11 starts for the Tides this season....
Chad Tracy could be a poster child for this season. He has been down so long, that any kind of up looks awfully good. One wonders if the high expectations for a team still lost in the desert, are weighing this whole enterprise down. Would that Tracy home run have been enough last season?
Tracy took out Jonathan Papelbon, which is no mean feat. It was Papelbon's first blown save of the season. But only scoring two runs against John Lannan, that is a mean feat. It is hard to watch Lannan...
We've seen Chris Davis hit home runs with a broken bat and with one hand. He's pulled them over the right field wall and flicked them the opposite way. He's launched towering fly balls out of the yard and hit screaming line drives just over the top of outfield fences. We've seen 101 home runs come off Davis' bat in his six years in the big leagues and they have come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
Baseball's league leader in the longball category has obviously been a topic of...
This past weekend, the Washington Nationals and Inova Blood Donor Services (IBDS) kicked off the first of two summer blood drives by knocking their overall donation goal out of the park. With more than 700 people registered to donate blood at Nationals Park on Saturday, June 15, IBDS collected more than 730 units of blood.
"Nats fans truly rallied around blood donation. More than 1,890 patients will benefit from the record number of blood products collected at the ballpark in one day,"...
I spoke last night with a friend of mine who's one of these people who takes and analyzes everything literally. I might also throw in that this guy is not in any way, shape or form, a baseball person. His opinion of baseball is that the pitcher throws, and the batter hits and runs. According to him it's that simple. Luckily we all know better.
In fairness, when this person mentioned that he watched yesterday's series finale with Boston, he said that he was impressed with the Orioles. I...
As the Nationals struggled again to bring runners home in their 2-0 loss in Cleveland on Sunday, their fans must have been fuming.
With apologies to Casey Stengel, or whoever initiated the quote that became the title of Jimmy Breslin's book chronicling the 1962 Mets, the question, "Can't anybody here play this game?" comes to mind.
Eleven times, Washington hitters came to bat with at least one runner in scoring position, and eleven times, they failed to get the runner home. Four of...
