Playing the waiting game (Green signs minor league deal)

Playing the waiting game (Green signs minor league deal)
In baseball's olden days - like, maybe, a decade or so ago - we'd just now be hitting the winter doldrums. There used to be a significant number of free agent signings (read: most of them) by the time the calendar turned to a new year. Trades were made throughout the offseason, but most of the wheeling and dealing came in December, a nod to baseball's Winter Meetings and the fact that general managers and front office staff used to spend most of the end-of-year holidays enjoying family...

Relive "Nationals Classics": Slugging your way into February

Relive "Nationals Classics": Slugging your way into February
Well, Nationals fans, we're almost ready to pass through one more hurdle between winter's cold and baseball warmth. By the end of this week, we can utter these words: Spring training starts this month. February never felt so good, did it? As we move closer to the four greatest words in the English language - pitchers and catchers report - you can warm yourself with this week's "Nationals Classics" on MASN. Think of this as your own personal pre-spring training training. Pretty soon,...

Orioles Health & Fitness Challenge returns to Sarasota County middle schools
For the second year, the Orioles and Sarasota County Schools will team up to encourage physical fitness, healthy eating, and tobacco-free living among middle school-aged children through the Orioles Health & Fitness Challenge. Launched last year in partnership with HealthFit Powered by Sarasota Memorial and SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco), the program will expand in 2017 to include a greater focus on both nutrition and tobacco-free living, as well as more involvement from Orioles...

Assessing the Nationals' in-house candidates to close (updated)

Assessing the Nationals' in-house candidates to close (updated)
We're less than a month from the date pitchers and catchers report to spring training at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches and the Nationals' closer picture is no clearer than it was during the Winter Meetings, when incumbent Mark Melancon signed a four-year, $62 million contract with the Giants. Since the season ended, with speculation that Melancon would bolt for greener pastures (emphasis on "green"), both manager Dusty Baker and general manager Mike Rizzo have trumpeted the in-house...

Who leads off for Nationals, Turner or Eaton?

Who leads off for Nationals, Turner or Eaton?
This time last year, the Nationals had just acquired outfielder Ben Revere in a trade with the Blue Jays and he was already slotted as their leadoff hitter. The Nats were hoping to take advantage of his speed to add another dimension to a lineup lacking fleet-footedness, and fans and prognosticators buried themselves in predictions of how many bases he might steal and how many runs he could score with potent bats following him. But Revere didn't get through his first regular season game with...

What lies ahead for Pedro Severino?

What lies ahead for Pedro Severino?
If you're Nationals catcher Pedro Severino, it's been quite a whirlwind few months. Summoned from Triple-A Syracuse on Sept. 2 for the stretch run, Severino's presence took on added significance on Sept. 26, when Wilson Ramos sustained a season-ending knee injury. Suddenly, Severino found himself starting two games in the National League Division Series. But since the Nats were eliminated from the playoffs, Severino has been on the proverbial roller coaster. When Ramos elected to test free...

A few thoughts on Rodriguez and the Hall of Fame

A few thoughts on Rodriguez and the Hall of Fame
Let's start off with a show of hands: Anyone else out there long for the days when we didn't have two-plus months of endless debate over who should be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame? Remember when the discussion period was only a couple of weeks, roughly right after the new year and up to the mid-January announcement of election results? Now we've moprhed from good-natured discussion and disagreement to animated sniping between writers and broadcasters, who debate a list of...

"Orioles Classics" rewind: How about some playoff action?

"Orioles Classics" rewind: How about some playoff action?
With apologies to a long-ago tirade by former NFL coach Jim Mora, we're talking playoffs this week. Yes, playoffs. As in the American League Division Series, which in 1997 pitted the Orioles against the Mariners in a coast-to-coast clash. On this week's "Orioles Classics" on MASN, you can relive the entire four-game series with midday broadcasts of the O's conquest of the wild card Mariners. It was a wild series full of twists and turns, marquee pitching matchups and unexpected power. If...

Orioles agree to terms with six players
The Orioles today announced that they have agreed to terms with left-handers Zach Britton nad T.J. McFarland, indielders Ryan Flaherty, Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop, and right-hander Chris Tillman on one-year contracts, thus avoiding arbitration. Britton, 29, led the American League with 47 saves, going 2-1 with a 0.54 ERA (4 ER/67.0 IP), the lowest ERA in Major League history among pitchers with at least 50.0 innings pitched. He was named an American League All-Star, earned the save in...

Relive "Nationals Classics": History, extras, whiffs and walk-offs
That little break of warm weather we had last week - pushing 70 degrees in January? Awesome! - only makes baseball fans yearn more for pitchers and catchers to report. But the good news is that it's now less than a month before batterymates converge on The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches for Nationals spring training. In the interim, we've got another week's worth of "Nationals Classics" on MASN, games that feature some of the best performances in curly W history. This week, there's the...

A few thoughts on the Hall of Fame balloting

A few thoughts on the Hall of Fame balloting
The Hall of Fame inductions are fuel for discussion and debate. The ballots from the Baseball Writers' Association were due on Dec. 31. The new inductees will be announced Jan. 18. Early vote totals say that Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds are going to make huge jumps in voter percentage this year, and each could finish with more than 70 percent of the vote. It takes 75 percent to get into Cooperstown. Both Clemens and Bonds are connected to steroids, so I don't see the logic in a huge upturn...

Orioles acquire Smith from Mariners for Gallardo, cash considerations
The Orioles today announced that they have acquired outfielder Seth Smith from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-hander Yovani Gallardo and cash considerations. Smith, 34, hit .249/.342/.415 (94-for-378) with 16 home runs and a career-high 63 RBI over 137 games with the Mariners last season. He led Seattle hitters with a .326 batting average (28-for-86) with runners in scoring position (ranked 12th among American League hitters), including a .545 clip (6-for-11) with the bases loaded....

"Orioles Classics" rewind: 1970, year of the Birds

"Orioles Classics" rewind: 1970, year of the Birds
As we move closer to spring training - and, hopefully, toward storing the rock salt and snow shovels for the winter - it's time to throw back to some of the most memorable games in Orioles history: the 1970 World Series, where the Birds vanquished the vaunted Big Red Machine from Cincinnati in five games to win their second world championship. Future Hall of Famers Johnny Bench and Tony Perez, along with eventual all-time hit king Pete Rose, were no match for Earl Weaver's Orioles. If you're...

In the cards: Showalter shares memories, wheels and deals from 24-year-old Fleer pack

In the cards: Showalter shares memories, wheels and deals from 24-year-old Fleer pack
Everyone knows Buck Showalter is a world-class manager who has led the Orioles to three playoff berths in the past five seasons. It's hard not to look at Showalter's arrival as the O's bench boss in 2010 as the time when the club's fortunes took an upward turn. Since then, the Orioles have ended a long playoff drought and posted a record of .500 or better for the past five seasons. It's been quite the renaissance. But Showalter is also an astute judge of talent. Did you know that he was...

Bobblehead featuring MASN's Kolko, Werth among P-Nats' Fans' Choice finalists
The Single-A Potomac Nationals always put out one of the most impressive slates of giveaway items each baseball season, and we've got our eye on a possible 2017 bobblehead with a MASN connection. For a second consecutive season, the P-Nats are planning a bobblehead giveaway based on a fan vote, sponsored by Loyal Hygiene Solutions. Best of all, you don't even have to attend a game in Woodbridge, Va. (actually, the voting will be completed by the time the new season opens at Pfitzner Stadium)...

Murphy reportedly agrees to join Team USA for WBC
Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy has reportedly agreed to join Team USA for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, making him the first of the team's position players to commit to the international tournament. Murphy would join right-hander Max Scherzer, who previously accepted an invitation from Team USA manager Jim Leyland, who managed him with the Tigers. The only other Nationals player committed to play in the WBC is left-handed reliever Oliver Perez, who will pitch for his native...

A few thoughts on the Nationals and the WBC

A few thoughts on the Nationals and the WBC
Coming off of minor offseason elbow surgery, Luis Ayala was a key member of the Nationals bullpen heading into the 2006 season. He had gone 8-7 with a 2.66 ERA and a save in 68 appearances in the team's first season in D.C. since relocating from Montreal and had cemented himself in an important setup role in front of closer Chad Cordero. The Nationals wanted Ayala to spend all of spring training with them in Viera, Fla., gradually building up strength in his elbow under the watchful eyes of...

Battle already brewing for Nats' final reserve outfield spot

Battle already brewing for Nats' final reserve outfield spot
One of the more interesting positional battles to watch when spring training convenes in six weeks at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Fla., will be the second reserve outfielder's spot on the 25-man roster. Barring an injury, it's a pretty good bet that Chris Heisey will be on the roster as a pinch-hitter and a backup to left fielder Jayson Werth, center fielder Adam Eaton and right fielder Bryce Harper. The Nationals will also have shortstop Trea Turner available to play...
