Chris Davis talks about keeping pace with Miguel Cabrera

If the season ended today, Detroit's Miguel Cabrera would not win the Triple Crown and neither would Chris Davis. That is because they are standing in the way of each other right now. Cabrera leads the American League in batting and RBIs, but Davis has a 19 to 16 edge in homers. In many other years, Davis' .356 average and RBI total of 50 might be leading the league at this point, but Cabrera is at .372 and 61. They rank first and second in the AL right now in batting average, homers, RBIs, total bases, extra-base hits and slugging. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Cabrera is the first player in major league history to enter June batting at least .340 with 15 or more homers and 60 or more RBIs. But there is Davis, keeping pace with him in many offensive categories. That is heady stuff for the Orioles first baseman. "It obviously means I'm doing something right," Davis said this afternoon. "Anytime you are mentioned in the same breath as a guy like Miguel, it is definitely an honor. "You know, Triple Crown, MVPs, those are nice and can make you a lot of money. But at the end of the day, it's about winning World Series. Everything that I am doing this year, it's more about helping the team than helping myself." Cabrera, a year after winning the first Triple Crown since 1967, just finished a month of May where he led the majors with 12 homers and 33 RBIs. Davis hit .364 in the month with 10 homers, 22 RBIs and a 1.210 OPS. Davis' 19 homers are the second-most by any Oriole at the end of May, trailing only Brady Anderson's 20 in 1996. Davis was the AL Player of the Month for April and the one player probably keeping him from getting the honor again is the Tigers' star slugger. "In my mind, he's one of the best hitters to ever play the game," Davis said. "As a professional player, he's a guy you watch and have a lot of respect and admiration for because of the way he goes about his business and how talented he is. You don't see guys like that very often." Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer last night. Davis went 2-for-4 with a key single in the ninth. Today, the two take the field again at 4:05 p.m., as the O's and Tigers play game two of this weekend series.
