Davis denied twice in Players Choice Awards

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis lost out twice to Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera in the Players Choice Awards, which were announced tonight on MLB Network. Cabrera was a repeat winner as the American League's Outstanding Player and the overall Player of the Year. Davis was nominated in both categories after leading the majors with 53 home runs, 138 RBIs and 370 total bases. He posted a .286/.370/.634 line with 42 doubles and a triple, and also was nominated for a Gold Glove. Cabrera led the majors with a .348 average, .442 on-base percentage, .636 slugging percentage and 1.078 OPS. He added 26 doubles, a triple, 44 homers and 137 RBIs. Cabrera, who also beat out the Angels' Mike Trout for AL Outstanding Player and the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw for Player of the Year, The Players Choice Awards have been handed out since 1992, when Barry Bonds and Dennis Eckersley were named the outstanding players in their respective leagues. Pittburgh's Andrew McCutchen was named the NL Outstanding Player over Paul Goldschmidt (Arizona) and Yadier Molina (St. Louis). Tampa Bay's Wil Myers won the award as the AL's Outstanding Rookie, topping Chris Archer (Tampa Bay) and José Iglesias (Detroit). Miami's Jose Fernandez beat out Shelby Miller (St. Louis) and Yasiel Puig (Los Angeles) for NL Outstanding Rookie. Kershaw was named NL Outstanding Pitcher over Fernandez and Francisco Liriano (Pittsburgh). Detroit's Max Scherzer was named AL Outstanding Pitcher over Anibal Sanchez (Detroit) and Yu Darvish (Texas). Liriano was named NL Comeback Player over Marlon Byrd (Pittsburgh) and Troy Tulowitzki (Colorado). Yankees future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera was chosen for the AL award over Scott Kazmir (Cleveland) and Victor Martinez (Detroit). Rivera also won the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award, beating Carlos Beltran (St. Louis) and Raúl Ibañez (Seattle).
