Davis places third in AL MVP voting, Machado and Jones among top 13

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis will have to be satisfied with his Silver Slugger Award and a hefty raise that's coming to him this winter. As expected, Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera won his second consecutive Most Valuable Player award in the American League. The announcement came tonight on MLB Network. The Angels' Mike Trout finished second in the BBWAA voting, and Davis placed third after receiving one first-place vote, four second, 11 third, 12 fourth, one fifth and one seventh. Third baseman Manny Machado finished ninth in his first full season in the majors. He received two fifth-place votes, one sixth, two seventh, five eighth, five ninth and seven 10th. Center fielder Adam Jones finished 13th with one fifth-place vote and one eighth. Davis' first-place vote came from Bill Ballou of the Worchester (Mass.) Telegram and Gazette. Machado's two fifth-place votes came from Lynn Henning of the Detroit News and Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle. Jones' fifth-place vote came from John Hickey of the Oakland Tribune. No Oriole has won the MVP award since Cal Ripken Jr. in 1991. Jones finished sixth last season, Jim Johnson 14th and Matt Wieters 21st. Oakland third baseman Josh Donaldson finished fourth in the voting this year, receiving one first-place vote, and Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano was fifth. Davis, named Most Valuable Oriole on the final day of the season, had never received votes for league MVP. Ballots were submitted before the playoffs. Davis led the majors with 53 homers, 138 RBIs and 370 total bases. He batted .286/.370/.634 with 42 doubles, one triple, 103 runs scored, 72 walks and 199 strikeouts in 673 plate appearances. Davis also was a finalist for a Gold Glove at first base. It wasn't enough to unseat Cabrera, who led the majors with a .348 average, .442 on-base percentage and .636 slugging percentage. He had 26 doubles, one triple, 44 homers, 137 RBIs, 103 runs, 90 walks and 94 strikeouts in 652 plate appearances. Machado won a Gold Glove and Platinum Glove, and was chosen by Wilson as the Orioles' best defensive player. He also led the majors with 51 doubles and 667 at-bats, and batted .283/.314/.432 with three triples, 14 homers, 71 RBIs, 88 runs, 29 walks and 113 strikeouts in 710 plate appearances. Jones won a Silver Slugger and Gold Glove in 2013. He batted .285/.318/.493 with 35 doubles, one triple, 33 homers, 108 RBIs, 100 runs, 25 walks and 136 strikeouts in 689 plate appearances. Davis is arbitration-eligible this winter and will get a nice bump in pay after earning $3.3 million in 2013. Some estimates place his salary near $10 million.
