DL Hall and Zach Watson done for season with injuries (down 13-6)

BOSTON - Left-hander DL Hall, the Orioles' first-round pick in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft and one of their top prospects, will miss the remainder of the season at Single-A Frederick due to mild strain of his left lat muscle.

Hall complained of soreness after his last start on Aug. 8 and was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain. There aren't enough games left in the minor league season to get him back on the mound, but he could pitch in the Arizona Fall League.

The season already was a success for Hall, 20, who posted a 3.46 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and .189 average-against in 19 games (17 starts) with 54 walks and 116 strikeouts in 80 2/3 innings.

Hall, ranked as the No. 62 prospect by MLB Pipeline, has registered a 2.96 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and .201 average-against in 46 games since the Orioles drafted him.

He threw a career-high 99 pitches in his last start. The Keys placed him on the injured list today.

Also, outfielder Zach Watson, a third-round pick this year out of LSU, has been shut down after being hit by a pitch last week in the hand/wrist area and fracturing a bone.

The good news is Watson won't need surgery.

Watson was batting a combined .226/.297/.435 with nine doubles and five home runs in 36 games between short-season Single-A Aberdeen and low Single-A Delmarva.

Outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. said he's headed to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday to begin his injury rehab assignment.

Smith ran the bases today at Fenway Park to further test out his strained left calf muscle. His injury rehab assignment date back to July 30.

"I think we're going to see how he recovers tomorrow and go from there," said manager Brandon Hyde. "Not a set time yet, but big step going forward is him running the bases today and not feeling anything. Now we'll talk about it and go through his progression.

"Obviously he started the year swinging the bat really well. Like most players and young players, kind of had moments where he had to make adjustments. Unfortunately just kind of never got going because of the injury, so I'd like to see him get back to swinging the bat like he did the first couple months of the season and stay healthy throughout the rest of the year.

Hyde will figure out later how to supply at-bats for Smith, DJ Stewart and other outfielders on the roster.

"I'm just going to be shuffling guys and the DH helps," Hyde said. "I'd like to see as many young guys play as possible. This year has been an evaluation year and we're going to continue throwing guys out there in September and watch guys perform and see who's going to be around going forward."

Trey Mancini is the designated hitter today, keeping a bat in the lineup that abuses the Red Sox.

Hyde will try to rest him later.

"I'd like to give him a full day off, but I'd also like to try to win this baseball game," Hyde said. "I'd love to get him off his feet entirely. I feel like I'm running him into the ground a little bit just because he's such a big part of our offense and swinging the bat really well.

"He's going to DH today. And he fouled a ball off his calf last night, too. It stiffened up a little bit, so I just wanted to give him a break."

Hunter Harvey's debut last night, with two strikeouts in a scoreless eighth inning, remained a hot topic this morning.

"I love obviously the arm," Hyde said. "It's 100 mph with nice secondary stuff and it's great to see a guy make his debut and pitch with no fear and have great composure on the mound. Didn't look nervous at all.

"I think it really helps him growing up in a baseball family and yeah, he just looked the part. He looked like a backend bullpen guy on a playoff club last night, so that was really fun to watch."

Update: Renato Núñez hit a three-run homer off Nathan Eovaldi in the first inning for a 3-0 lead.

Update II: Mancini's two-run single in the second increased the lead to 5-0.

Update III: Hanser Alberto's RBI double in the third off left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez increased the lead to 6-0.

Update IV: Rafael Devers and Xander Bogaerts were retired in the third, but they also had RBIs to reduce the lead to 6-2.

Update V: Sam Travis hit a solo homer off Ty Blach in the fourth and the lead is down to 6-3.

Update VI: The Red Sox tied the game with three runs in the sixth, two charged to Blach to leave him with five in 5 1/3 innings. Christian Vázquez had an RBI double off Gabriel Ynoa and Mitch Moreland had a bloop RBI single off Paul Fry. Jonathan Villar's throwing error allowed the tying run to score.

Update VII: The Red Sox added three more runs in the inning to lead 9-6 and Chance Sisco left the game after taking a foul ball in the groin region.

Update VIII: Devers hit a two-run homer off Shawn Armstrong in a four-run seventh.
