Orioles surrender 13 straight runs in 13-7 loss (updated)

The sixth inning is like the trap door that keeps fooling the Orioles. If they don't fall through it, a lead certainly will disappear.

Ahead by six runs in the third, the Orioles became helpless as the Red Sox started to chip away and dismantled them by scoring six times in the sixth to take the lead and complete the sweep with a 13-7 victory at Fenway Park.

Chance Sisco was injured twice in the inning, with Sam Travis plowing into his left shoulder and a foul ball slamming into his groin region and forcing him out of the game.

An entire team was doubled over as the Red Sox sent 12 batters to the plate and led 9-6. They'd score 13 straight runs on the day, which included rain in the seventh. Because why not?

Renato Núñez had a sacrifice fly in the ninth for a really late response from the Orioles.

Rafael Devers followed Mookie Betts' sacrifice fly in the seventh with a two-run homer off Shawn Armstrong that Statcast measured at 482 feet. J.D. Martinez had an RBI single later in the inning for a 13-6 lead.

Orioles pitching has surrendered 255 home runs, three short of the major league record.

Ty Blach was charged with two more runs after he left the game, giving him five in 5 1/3 innings. Gabriel Ynoa faced one batter, allowed Christian Vázquez's RBI double and was charged with his own run. Paul Fry surrendered three in one-third and Armstrong let an inherited runner score when Chris Davis backhanded Martinez's grounder, didn't find anyone covering second as he ran toward it and threw late to first.

The Orioles lost all seven games on the road trip and have dropped 12 of their last 13. They're 39-85 overall, failing again to achieve a 40th win that came to them last season on Aug. 29.

Opponents have outscored the Orioles 122-49 in the sixth. The only inning that favors them is the eighth (59-51).

Blach hadn't gone more than four innings in the majors since working 6 2/3 out of the bullpen on June 14, 2018 in Miami while pitching for the Giants. He lasted 5 1/3 today and left with runners on the corners and one out in a 6-3 game.

Vázquez doubled off Ynoa to reduce the lead to 6-4 and put two runners in scoring position. Fry entered with Mitch Moreland announced as the pinch-hitter and a high popup in shallow left field somehow fell for an RBI single. Jonathan Villar made an ill-advised throw home, the ball appearing to nick Davis' glove as he attempted the cut-off, and Travis clipped Sisco.

Head athletic trainer Brian Ebel raced out of the dugout and Sisco eventually got to his feet and stayed in the game. The Orioles didn't have the same luck.

Betts walked with two outs and Devers produced an RBI double. Xander Bogaerts and Martinez followed with a run-scoring infield hits.

Bogaerts inflicted his worst damage before the single, a foul ball nailing Sisco and bringing Pedro Severino into the game. Fans applauded as Sisco walked to the dugout. No one suffered more than him.

The Red Sox had crept to within 6-3 in the fourth inning on Travis' solo shot off Blach, the ball traveling 426 feet to center field. They scored twice the previous inning on RBI grounders by Devers and Bogaerts.

Third time through the order would take down the Orioles again.

Núñez wanted the walk in the first inning and settled for a jog around the bases.

Ahead in the count 3-0 with runners on the corners in the top of the first inning, Núñez laid off a cutter from Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi and leaned toward first base as plate umpire Jansen Visconti called a strike. Núñez watched a 97 mph fastball that he thought missed outside, took a few steps toward first and was stopped again.

Eovaldi tried a curveball with the next pitch and Núñez ran out of patience, launching it 415 feet over the Green Monster.

Villar led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Mancini walked, Anthony Santander popped up to catcher Sandy León and Núñez muscled his 27th home run of the season.

A leadoff walk to Davis in the second set the table for more scoring. Villar walked with two outs after another wild pitch and Mancini roped a single into center for a 5-0 lead. Mancini was thrown out going to second base.

Eovaldi headed back to the dugout and didn't return, his outing done after two innings and 43 pitches.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora used six relievers behind Eovaldi, who served as an opener. Darwinzon Hernandez was charged with a run in the third when he hit Núñez and surrendered an RBI double to Hanser Alberto, who had two more hits today against left-handers.

The Orioles were cruising but it was early.

The Red Sox pecked away.

They went on the full attack in the sixth, as so many other teams have done. And they wouldn't let up.

Update: The Orioles were swept for the 11th time this season. They fell to 25-13 when scoring six runs or more.

Hyde on needing relievers to put out fires: "Well, Paul Fry did. He came in and got a popup and a punchout. We didn't catch the popup and the wheels fell off following the punchout of Owings. Should have been out of there with a two-run lead and unfortunately it steamrolled on us."

Hyde on Sisco: "He got hit right in the privates. Obviously he had a terrible inning and got hit in a bad spot. He's getting checked out medically right now, so hoping that he's OK, but we'll have to wait and see right now."

Hyde on Sisco's collision with Travis: "His shoulder/neck, just sore. I haven't seen the replay on it, to be honest with you. I know he got hit pretty good and had something going on with his shoulder and neck. Ebel was checking on it. But remained in the game and felt OK after he kind of shook it off a little bit. And then he gets hit again."

Hyde on wheels coming off: "We've got to catch the popup. That's a play that needs to be made obviously. So then after that the walk to Betts, which I'm OK with. Left on left and a two-strike mistake to Devers. And then just didn't go well that inning. Anything bad that could happen happened for us and it's unfortunate."

Hyde on Devers: "I think he's a young superstar that is a guy who's an absolute force offensively and is going to be an incredible player in this league for a long time."

Davis on sixth inning: "Too many mistakes. I mean, we did a great job early on getting on Eovaldi and getting in their bullpen and scoring some runs. Ty threw the ball outstanding today and really deserved the win, but we made too many mistakes. When you make mistakes like that against a team like this, they're going make it hurt."

Davis on team handling rough stretch: "We've got to stay together. I think that's the biggest thing for us on and off the field. The lack of communication, just making the mistakes that we made today, we can't afford to do that and we've got to start pulling for one another. We've got to stay in it together and we've got to keep going."

Davis on tough schedule: "I actually like playing these teams because they make you play your best baseball. If you have a weakness they expose it and you find out what kind of team you are when you play the best teams. Everybody's good in the big leagues. This division is tough, but you've got to come in day in and day out, you've got to work, you've got to prepare yourself and get ready to win."

Davis again on mistakes: "Like I said, we made too many mistakes. When you have a performance like that, you've to go to be able to have his back. I can't say it enough. We just made too many careless mistakes today."

Davis on his backhanded stop and late throw: "Thought that was my only play. I was the only guy on that side of the infield and looked up and there was nobody at the bag. I turned and it was too late. Those kinds of things are the kind of mistakes I'm talking about. Lack of communication. We can't leave bases uncovered. We can't be overthrowing the cutoff guys. We've just got to do little things right."

Blach on watching inning unravel: "That's hard. We're battling, trying to figure out a way to get a zero right there. A few weird plays, a ball drops in, a guy gets knocked over at the plate, things kind of spiral. It's tough. It's tough."
