Duchscherer shut down

Justin Duchscherer was scratched from today's start at extended spring training, and it's unknown when he'll pitch again. Duchscherer was supposed to throw three innings, but he removed himself from the start. A team official said the reason didn't involve Duchscherer's back or hip. Duchscherer is eligible to come off the disabled list on May 30. He's being paid $700,000 and will make another $400,000 if he's on the 25-man roster. Today didn't bring him any closer to that bonus. The Orioles have placed infielder Cesar Izturis on the disabled list and recalled first baseman Brandon Snyder from Triple-A Norfolk. First baseman Derrek Lee remains day-to-day with a strained left oblique. He feels better, and the Orioles will wait to find out if there's further improvement over the next few days. They're short two players on the bench tonight. Lee isn't available and Brian Roberts has been bothered by headaches the last few days. Roberts was in the trainers room after being examined by a team physician, which made him unavailable to reporters. Correcting something I wrote earlier, the Orioles won't need to make a corresponding 40-man roster move when they activate Alfredo Simon. They have one spot open after designating Josh Rupe for assignment, which I reported last week and then forgot.
