Duquette on De Aza trade, O's win 3-2

Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said he expects newly acquired outfielder Alejandro De Aza to arrive at Camden Yards for Sunday's game against the Twins.

Two roster moves are pending, with left-hander Wei-Yin Chen set to be recalled and start for the Orioles.

Duquette described De Aza as "a multi-talented outfielder."

"He's good in left, he can play center field," Duquette said. "He had two very good years in '12 and '13 where he hit for power, and he gives us a veteran outfielder that we can use to supplement our team.

"We have been looking to get a little bit better balance to our lineup with the addition of a left-handed hitter, and De Aza is a left-handed hitter that can help balance out the lineup and contribute to the team. And we thought it was important to continue to add major league players who can help us in September and also be eligible for the post-season when we advance.

"He's very good against right-handed pitching. That's his strength. He can play the outfield. He's a good defensive outfielder in left and he can run and he can steal a base. I'm sure Buck (Showalter) will find the right opportunity to use his skills to help the ballclub."

Duquette said he became aware that De Aza was available a couple of weeks ago.

"We had an original discussion then," he said, "and the discussions heated up in the last couple of days."

The Orioles may not be done. Duquette would like to bring in another piece, perhaps an infielder.

"We're going to continue to look around today and tomorrow," he said. "We've been working hard on the waiver wire and having discussions with other ballclubs, so hopefully we'll be able to add so that we have enough players for the stretch drive."

It's conceivable that the Orioles option a couple of starters on Sunday who wouldn't be available before their next turns, then bring them back after Sept. 1. Catcher Steve Clevenger could be optioned. We'll see.

Meanwhile, Adam Jones scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning on Chris Davis' fly ball to shallow center field.

Twins reliever Jared Burton hit Jones with one out and Nelson Cruz singled to put runners on the corners. Davis' 68th RBI of the season gave the Orioles a 3-2 lead.

Darren O'Day worked a scoreless eighth, as the Orioles try to move 22 games above .500 for the first time this season and increase their lead over the Yankees to eight games in the American League East.

Zach Britton became the 10th different Oriole with 30 saves.

The Orioles are 78-56 overall and lead the Yankees by eight games in the AL East. They're 36-17 since June 30, the best record in the majors.

The Orioles are 39-27 at home and 15-16 vs. the AL Central.
